Chapter 7 - Springtime on the HillTen years later.

The Mercy Creek Community Medical Center was no longer just a local hospital; it was celebrated statewide as a beacon of compassionate, accessible healthcare. Its walls were filled with bright murals, the laughter of healthy children, and the hum of a dedicated staff who treated patients like human beings rather than ledger entries.

On a bright Saturday morning in May, the annual Mercy Creek Spring Gala was held on the expansive lawn of the Wright estate.

String lights twinkled through the branches of the ancient oaks, classical music drifted across the manicured grass, and the tables were laden with food provided by local bakeries and family-owned farms—a deliberate homage to the community that had weathered the storm together.

Joanna stood on the veranda of the grand mansion, wearing a simple, elegant emerald-green silk dress, holding a glass of sparkling cider as she watched the festivities below.

A small, energetic boy with dark curls and bright, intelligent gray eyes came running up the steps, holding a sketchbook in one hand and a box of colored pencils in the other.

"Mama! Mama, look! I drew the new pediatric wing!" ten-year-old Leo shouted excitedly, holding up a remarkably detailed architectural sketch of the hospital addition.

Joanna knelt down, taking the sketchbook from his small hands, her heart swelling with pride as she examined the clean, precise lines.

"This is incredible, sweetheart," she smiled, kissing the top of his head. "Are you going to be an architect now instead of a surgeon?"

"I'm going to build hospitals that make people smile," Leo declared with absolute certainty, before turning and sprinting back toward the lawn where Dr. Robert Wright—now eighty-two, but still sharp-witted and spry—was waiting to play catch with a soft leather baseball.

Joanna watched them, a deep, quiet contentment settling over her chest.

She felt a gentle touch on her shoulder. She turned to find Marcus Vance standing beside her, holding two fresh glasses of cider, a warm, affectionate smile on his face. They had built a life together over the years—not out of convenience or social obligation, but out of a profound, hard-earned partnership built on mutual respect, shared laughter, and late nights reviewing legal briefs at the kitchen table.

"He's getting taller every day," Marcus observed softly, nodding toward Leo, who had just managed to strike out his grandfather, much to Robert's exaggerated dismay and laughter.

"He is," Joanna agreed, leaning her head gently against Marcus's shoulder. "He's growing up in a world where he knows he's loved, no matter what."

Down on the lawn, the music swelled, the laughter of children echoed into the warm evening air, and the lights of the estate shone like a constellation against the rolling hills of Mercy Creek.

The ghosts of the past were gone, buried beneath the foundation of a new legacy. And as Joanna looked out over the horizon, she knew that whatever tomorrow brought, she was finally, completely home.
