Chapter 4 - Sanctuary by the LakeThe drive to Lake Geneva took an hour and a half through torrential rain and winding country roads, flanked by a two-car security detail with their headlights cutting through the dark.

Ethan’s lakeside estate was breathtaking—a sprawling stone mansion nestled among dense pine trees right on the edge of the dark, churning water. Inside, roaring stone fireplaces chased away the chill of the storm, and the scent of burning pine filled the air.
While Mrs. Gable settled Sophie into a crib upstairs, I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master study, watching the rain lash against the dark glass of the lake.
The door opened quietly, and Ethan walked in, carrying two crystal glasses of scotch. He handed me one, though I only held it for the warmth, keeping my eyes fixed on the storm outside.
“You’re quiet tonight,” Ethan said, leaning against the stone mantelpiece of the fireplace.
“I’m just realizing what my life has become,” I whispered, taking a slow sip of the smoky liquid. “Five days ago, I was a tired waitress in East L.A., terrified of how I was going to pay for baby formula. Now, I’m hiding out in a billionaire mobster’s lake house while rival gangs try to blow up his gates.”
Ethan walked over, standing close enough that I could feel the heat radiating off him.
“You were never just a tired waitress, Rachel,” he said softly. “You were a survivor. And you didn't ask to be pulled into this war. I dragged you into it because I couldn't walk away from you on that plane.”
I turned my head to look up at him. The amber light of the fire danced across the sharp lines of his face.
“Why?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “Why didn't you just let me fly away?”
Ethan reached out, gently taking the glass from my hand and setting it on the table. He cupped my face in both hands, his thumbs softly brushing against my cheekbones.
“Because for ten years, Rachel, I’ve built walls out of concrete, steel, and fear,” he murmured, his eyes searching mine with a raw, terrifying intensity. “I thought I was untouchable. But the moment I saw you holding that baby, fighting the whole world with your bare hands... I realized I had been living in the dark. You are the light I didn't know I was looking for.”

Before I could answer, before my brain could process the roaring avalanche of emotion swelling in my chest, Ethan leaned down and pressed his lips softly, desperately against mine.
It wasn't just a kiss. It was an anchor in the middle of a raging storm.
