Chapter 4 - The Shadow at the GateTwo days passed in a blur of surreal luxury and forced recovery.

Dr. Vance, a brilliant and discreet physician on the Callahan payroll, gave Sophie a clean bill of health and prescribed me iron supplements and mandatory bed rest. Mrs. Gable treated us like visiting royalty, preparing nourishing meals and fussing over every detail of my daughter's care.
Ethan dropped by the east wing twice a day. We didn't talk about his business, and he didn't pry into my past beyond what his security files already revealed. We sat by the window in the quiet afternoons, drinking coffee while Sophie played on a plush rug, laughing as she tried to grab the expensive gold buttons on Ethan’s sleeve.
I watched him interact with my daughter—patient, gentle, and utterly transfixed—and I realized the monster the newspapers described was a fiction invented by frightened men. Ethan Callahan was a protector. A brutal one, yes, but a protector nonetheless.
However, paradise behind iron gates never lasts.
It was Thursday evening. A heavy autumn rain drummed against the reinforced glass of the estate windows. I was sitting in the library reading a book when the mansion’s interior lighting flickered, instantly plunging into a dull, amber emergency glow.
Wooo-wooo-wooo!
The low, piercing shriek of a tactical security alarm echoed through the halls.
I bolted up from the armchair, clutching my chest as my heart hammered against my ribs. The heavy oak door of the library swung open, and two of Ethan’s armed bodyguards rushed in.
“Miss Morales, stay away from the windows,” the lead guard commanded, his hand resting on the grip of a concealed firearm. “We’ve breached perimeter defense. A rival faction just tried to ram the front security gates with a truck.”
“Ethan? Where is Ethan?!” I demanded, panic rising in my throat.
“The boss is in the courtyard,” the guard said grimly. “We need to move you and the baby down to the reinforced basement shelter immediately.”
“No! Take me to him!”
Before the guard could argue, the library doors flew open again.
Ethan strode into the room. He was wearing a tactical vest over a black button-down shirt, a dark leather holster strapped across his chest. There was a fresh, shallow scratch along his jawline, and his eyes were burning with cold, calculated fury.
“Rachel, are you and Sophie alright?” he asked, crossing the room in three long strides.
“We’re fine! But what’s happening? Who attacked us?!”
“The Chicago Syndicate’s north-side faction,” Ethan replied tightly, pulling out his encrypted satellite phone to bark orders at his perimeter teams. “They thought my attention was divided because I brought civilian guests into the house. They just made the biggest mistake of their lives.”

He looked down at me, his expression softening instantly as he cupped my cheek with his warm, calloused hand.
“Pack a bag, Rachel. The safehouse isn't safe anymore. We’re moving to my private estate in Lake Geneva tonight.”
