Chapter 7 - The Unbroken Horizon

Six months later, the spring air along the shores of Lake Michigan was warm, bright, and filled with the promise of new beginnings.
The sprawling Russo estate in Winnetka was surrounded by lush gardens and heavy security, but inside, it felt less like a fortress and more like a real home.
In the bright, sunlit nursery, a chubby, healthy one-year-old boy laughed hysterically as he chased a shiny red balloon across the plush rug. Leo was walking now—stumbling clumsily on his chubby legs, full of life and joy.
I sat on the white velvet sofa, watching him with a wide smile, wearing a simple sundress.
Heavy, familiar footsteps echoed down the hardwood hallway. A moment later, Daniel walked in, shedding his suit jacket and tossing it over the armchair. He walked straight over, wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, and pressed a soft kiss to the top of my head.
“How’s my favorite boy?” Daniel asked, scooping Leo up into his arms and tossing him gently into the air, eliciting a loud, squegling giggle from the toddler.
“He’s getting too fast for me,” I laughed, standing up and brushing a hand against Daniel’s chest. “If he keeps climbing the bookshelves, we’re going to need a helmet.”
Michael was doing exceptionally well too, safely settled in Zurich running a quiet digital archiving firm with financial backing that mysteriously never ran out. The shadows of our past life had finally receded, replaced by the brilliant, unbroken horizon of a brand-new future.
Daniel set Leo down to play with his blocks, then turned his full, intense gaze back toward me, wrapping both arms around my shoulders.
“You saved my son, Rachel,” Daniel whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “And then you saved me from destroying myself in the dark.”
I looked up into his dark, steady eyes, realizing that the dangerous mafia boss who had once terrified me was the very person who made me feel safest in the world.

“I didn't save you, Daniel,” I smiled, resting my hands against his chest. “We saved each other.”
He pulled me close, capturing my lips in a deep, tender kiss as Leo giggled at our feet, marking the true beginning of our forever.
