Chapter 4 - The Audit of LiesThe federal investigation into Grant Carlisle and Vanessa Vale turned out to be less of an audit and more of a total financial demolition.

By sunset, our living room looked like a war room. Three forensic accountants from the Department of Justice sat at our dining table surrounded by towering stacks of printed bank statements, tax returns, corporate filings, and encrypted hard drives seized from Grant’s home office. The air smelled of cold coffee, printer toner, and imminent ruin.
I sat on the white sofa—the very same sofa where Vanessa had lounged in my husband's robe just hours earlier—with Lily curled up asleep against my lap. She was wrapped in a warm blanket, her little hands gently bandaged by the paramedics who had treated her friction burns and bruises. Her breathing was steady and deep, free from the terrifying nocturnal gasps that had haunted her sleep for weeks.
Agent Vance walked into the living room holding a thick manila folder, his boots clicking softly against the hardwood floor.
“Well,” Marcus said, dropping the folder onto the coffee table with a heavy thud. “Your husband wasn't just embezzling your trust fund, Evelyn. He was running a full-scale shell company scam with Vanessa’s father, Judge Vale.”
I kept my eyes on Lily’s sleeping face, gently stroking her hair. “Go on.”
“They were using your grandfather’s inheritance as seed capital to purchase commercial properties under fictitious LLCs,” Marcus explained, flipping open the folder to reveal a complex flowchart of financial transactions. “And it gets worse. When we decrypted Grant’s office computer, we found a series of emails between him and Vanessa dating back four months. They were actively planning to have you declared legally missing and presumed dead if your border operation extended past the six-month mark. They wanted your federal survivor benefits and the title to this house.”
A cold fury washed over me, sharp and clean. They hadn't just cheated on me; they had calculated my death, plotted my daughter’s abuse, and treated my life like a disposable asset on a spreadsheet.
“What about Judge Vale?” I asked quietly.
Marcus’s lips twitched into a grim, humorless smile. “The Judicial Inquiry Commission already has his files. Federal marshals served a search warrant on his chambers at noon. He’s currently suspended from the bench pending an ethics tribunal. His political career is completely dead in the water.”
“Good,” I said. “Make sure every single piece of evidence we gathered is locked down tight. I don't want a single loophole for their defense attorneys to exploit.”
“Don't worry, Agent Carlisle,” Marcus assured me, placing a heavy hand on my shoulder. “The U.S. Attorney’s office is salivating over this case. Grant is facing up to fifteen years for wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy. Vanessa is looking at concurrent charges for accessory and child abuse. They’re never stepping foot outside a federal penitentiary anytime soon.”
Just then, my satellite phone buzzed against my belt.
I carefully shifted Lily so she wouldn't wake up, pulled the phone free, and checked the encrypted caller ID. It was the county detention center intake desk.
I swiped to answer.
“Agent Carlisle,” I said.
“Evelyn? Ev, please, you have to listen to me!” Grant’s voice shrieked through the speaker, frantic, high-pitched, and dripping with pathetic desperation. He sounded like a cornered rat. “The guards won't let me make bail! They put me in a holding cell with—Ev, you can’t do this to me! We’ve been married for seven years! Drop the charges, and I’ll sign the house back over to you! I’ll give you everything!”
I listened to him beg, marveling at how quickly a man who had felt like a king in my living room could be reduced to a sniveling coward behind steel bars.
“Grant,” I said, my voice as cold and flat as a winter lake. “When you sat on that sofa and watched that woman abuse my daughter while she knelt on a freezing floor... you signed your own sentence. Enjoy your new home.”
I tapped the red end call button, powered off the phone, and tossed it onto the coffee table.

Marcus watched me with an expression of profound respect. “Cold-blooded, Agent Carlisle.”
“No,” I replied, looking down at Lily as she stirred peacefully in her sleep, wrapping her tiny fingers around my thumb. “That’s just what justice looks like when you finally come home.”
