Chapter 3 - The Gala at the PlazaThe Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel on a crisp autumn Saturday evening was a breathtaking spectacle of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and Manhattan’s elite dressed in millions of dollars of designer silk and diamonds.

String quartets played softly from the mezzanine while waiters in white jackets circulated with silver trays of caviar and vintage Dom Pérignon.

At the center table, right beneath the massive floral centerpiece, sat Ryan Calloway.

He looked every bit the triumphant corporate king. At thirty-nine, his sharp jawline was accentuated by a tailored tuxedo, and his smile radiated effortless confidence as he accepted congratulations from local politicians and senior bank executives. Seated right beside him was Savannah Brooks, draped in a backless metallic Versace gown, flashing her million-dollar smile for the society photographers stationed along the perimeter of the room.

“Look at him,” whispered a society columnist standing near the bar. “Ryan Calloway is untouchable this year. Rumor has it Calloway Development is about to announce a massive merger that will make him a billionaire several times over.”

“What about his ex-wife?” another voice murmured. “Whatever happened to that quiet girl he was married to for all those years?”

“Oh, she vanished into the woodwork,” Savannah’s high, melodic laugh cut through the chatter. “Some people simply aren't built for the fast lane. Ryan outgrew her, plain and simple.”

Ryan smiled, swirling his champagne glass. “Let’s not speak of ghosts tonight. Tonight is about the future.”

Little did they know, the ghost was about to walk right through the front doors.

At precisely 8:00 PM, the massive double doors of the Grand Ballroom swung open. The ambient chatter in the room didn't just quiet down; it evaporated into absolute, suffocating silence.

All heads turned toward the entryway.

Flashbulbs immediately began to pop with blinding fury as the press corps realized who had just arrived.

Walking through the doorway, gliding across the polished marble floor with effortless, regal grace, was Claire Vance-Calloway—or simply Claire, as I now preferred to be known. But I wasn't alone.

Escorting me by the elbow was Julian Vance himself—the elusive, legendary billionaire investor whom the media had spent years trying to photograph. Julian wore a classic midnight-blue tuxedo, his silver hair distinguished, his presence commanding absolute authority in a room full of powerful men.

And on my other side, holding my hand with quiet, steady strength, was Marcus Sterling—the reclusive tech tycoon whose venture fund controlled the digital infrastructure of half of North America.

I wore an emerald-green silk gown that shimmered under the crystal chandeliers, a diamond-encrusted vintage choker resting gracefully against my collarbone—a family heirloom given to me by my uncle. My posture was straight, my head held high, and my gaze swept across the room with cool, unbothered detachment.

The whispers began instantly, rolling across the ballroom like an incoming tide.

“Isn’t that... isn’t that Claire Calloway?”

“The ex-wife? What is she doing with Julian Vance?!”

“Wait, is that Marcus Sterling holding her arm? I thought Sterling didn't attend social events!”

My eyes scanned the center table.

Ryan Calloway had been mid-sentence, laughing at something Savannah whispered in his ear. As the murmurs reached his table, he turned his head lazily toward the entrance.

His smile didn't just fade.

It shattered.

The glass of champagne in Ryan’s hand slipped from his fingers, crashing onto the mahogany table and splashing amber liquid across Savannah’s designer dress. He froze, his face turning the color of bleached paper, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated disbelief as he stared at me walking toward the dais on the arm of the most powerful investor in the country.
