Chapter 1 - The Crash Cart, the Sirens, and the CollapseThe wail of the ambulance siren cut through the polished marble corridors of the luxury maternity center like a jagged blade.

Red and blue emergency lights flashed wildly against the high-gloss ceilings, casting erratic, frantic shadows over the gold-lettered plaques and high-end floral arrangements that lined the walls. Outside, the rain was coming down in sheets, blurring the city lights into a smear of cold, indifferent neon. But inside the emergency corridor, the atmosphere was thick with the metallic stench of iron and the suffocating panic of a medical emergency spiraling completely out of control.

On the gurney, my body was wracked by a violent tremor.

A catastrophic warmth had flooded my bedsheets moments before the paramedics burst through the heavy double doors—a terrifying, unstoppable rush of blood that signaled a severe postpartum hemorrhage. My vision blurred at the edges, tunneling into a pinprick of gray light as the agonizing contractions gave way to a cold, heavy numbness spreading rapidly through my limbs.

“Her blood pressure is dropping dangerously low! Systolic is at seventy and falling!” a paramedic shouted over the screaming alarm of the heart monitor. “We need to secure a large-bore IV line immediately and push fluids! Where are the attending physicians? Why is this facility completely stripped of surgical staff?!”

Caleb, the young nurse who had stayed behind despite Ethan’s orders, stood beside the gurney, his face drained of every drop of color. His hands shook as he held pressure on my abdomen, trying desperately to stem the bleeding.

“They... they took every single specialist, the entire anesthesiology team, and the portable ultrasound to VIP Suite 3 for Serena’s scheduled birth!” Caleb cried out, his voice cracking with sheer terror and guilt. “There’s no one left in the building! The entire upper-floor wing was cleared out by executive order!”

“Damn it!” the lead paramedic cursed, slamming a medical box onto the floor. “She’s hemorrhaging actively! If we don't get her into surgery within ten minutes, she’s going into hypovolic shock! Move, move, move!”

With a violent lurch, the gurney wheels locked into place inside the back of the mobile intensive care unit.

Just twenty feet away, through the reinforced glass doors of the VIP wing, the scene looked like a Hollywood movie set. Flashing strobe lights from professional cameras cut through the glass. A massive crowd of hospital executives, public relations managers, and sycophantic doctors stood clapping enthusiastically.

In the center of that glowing, triumphant tableau stood Ethan Vance.

He was wearing his tailored charcoal suit, his golden cufflinks gleaming under the spotlight, cradling Serena’s newborn baby against his chest with an expression of ecstatic, unearned pride. Serena lay propped up on silken pillows, radiant and smiling, surrounded by towering bouquets of white lilies and a gleaming gold plaque that read: 5th Anniversary: Welcoming Our First Miracle Baby.

They were celebrating a staged corporate miracle while I was bleeding to death on a stretcher fifty yards away.

Caleb, standing at the edge of the ambulance doors, couldn't take it anymore. Driven by a fierce surge of righteous fury, he had sprinted down the corridor right behind the gurney, bursting through the perimeter of flashbulbs and PR cameras.

His voice ripped through the celebration like a thunderclap:

“Mr. Vance! Put that child down!”

The flashbulbs stuttered and died. The polite applause evaporated into a stunned, heavy silence.

Ethan turned slowly, annoyance flashing across his handsome face as he clutched someone else's baby in his arms. “Caleb? What the hell do you think you’re doing? Security, remove this—!”

“Your wife just suffered a massive hemorrhage!” Caleb screamed, his finger pointing directly at the open ambulance doors where I lay gasping for air. “She’s being rushed to Dallas General Hospital right now! Before she left, she legally revoked your medical power of attorney, wiped your corporate credentials, and stripped you of every single managerial right you hold over her or this child!”

The cameras captured every millisecond of the transformation.

Ethan’s triumphant, glowing smile froze mid-expression. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse carved from marble. The newborn infant in his arms stirred, letting out a faint cry, but Ethan didn't even notice. His arms went completely rigid.

“W-What...?” Ethan stammered, the words catching in his throat like broken glass. “What did you say...?”

“You traded your own wife and daughter for a photo op!” Caleb shouted, tears of rage springing to his eyes. “She’s dying, Ethan! And because you emptied this wing, there was no one to save her!”

The words hit Ethan like a physical blow.

He staggered backward, crashing hard against the rolling IV pole beside Serena’s bed. The metal pole toppled over with a deafening crash, scattering sterile supplies across the floor.

Without a word, without looking at Serena, without caring about the cameras or the millions of dollars riding on the PR stunt, Ethan dropped the newborn into a nurse’s trembling arms and sprinted toward the doors.

He bolted down the corridor, his expensive dress shoes skidding on the slick marble floor. He burst through the glass doors just as the ambulance slammed its rear doors shut, locking me inside.

“Serena! Wait! Open the doors!” Ethan screamed, throwing his entire weight against the heavy steel ambulance doors as the vehicle engaged its transmission.

He pounded his fists against the reinforced glass, his eyes wide with frantic, unadulterated terror.

“Serena! Please! Let me in! Cassidy—!”

The ambulance surged forward, kicking up a spray of cold rainwater as it accelerated down the ramp and into the dark, stormy night, leaving Ethan collapsing to his knees in the middle of the flooded parking lot, staring at the empty space where his entire life had just vanished.
