Chapter 6 - The Executive AmbushThe rain beat against the glass facade of Vale-Miller Engineering and Construction, but inside the boardroom, the atmosphere was even more turbulent.

Jason sat at the head of the long walnut conference table, leading a quarterly review presentation for senior regional directors. He looked stressed, his hair slightly unkempt, his tailored suit jacket wrinkled from weeks of scrambling to figure out why his bank accounts were suddenly frozen and why his frantic text messages to my phone had been met with stony silence.

He thought he was dealing with a runaway wife throwing a post-wedding tantrum. He had no idea he was standing in the epicenter of an oncoming legal hurricane.

The heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open with a sharp click.

Jason frowned, looking up from his presentation notes. “Excuse me, this is a private executive session—you can’t just—”

He stopped dead in his tracks.

Standing in the doorway wasn't building security.

It was Marcus Sterling, flanked by a uniformed court process server carrying a thick leather briefcase, and right behind them, stepping into the bright fluorescent light of the room with a pale, trembling face and a designer handbag clutched tightly in her knuckles, was Chloe Vance.

The color drained entirely from Jason’s face. He gripped the edge of the walnut table so hard his knuckles turned stark white.

“Chloe...?” Jason choked out, his voice cracking in front of half a dozen stunned corporate executives. “What are you... how did you get here?”

Chloe didn't look at him. Her eyes were fixed entirely on the documents Marcus was pulling out of his briefcase.

“Mr. Miller,” Marcus announced loudly, his voice echoing authoritatively across the boardroom. “My name is Marcus Sterling, legal counsel for Mrs. Rachel Miller. I am serving you with formal notification of pending divorce proceedings, a comprehensive civil lawsuit for financial fraud and fraudulent inducement, and an emergency federal injunction freezing all real estate assets tied to 1424 Willow Creek Lane.”

“You’re out of your mind!” Jason roared, jumping up from his chair, his corporate veneer shattering completely as panic took over. “This is a private corporate meeting! You have no right to barge in here—!”

“I have every right,” Marcus interrupted smoothly, sliding a certified copy of our courthouse marriage certificate across the table toward Chloe. “And Miss Vance here has a right to know that the man who convinced her to co-sign a mortgage on a suburban home four months ago was legally marrying another woman across town while using her financial contributions to fund a double life.”

Chloe gasped, staggering backward as if she had been physically struck. She stared at Jason, horror and absolute betrayal dawning in her hazel eyes.

“Jason... is this true?” Chloe whispered, her voice shaking violently. “Were you... were you married to someone else when we bought the house?”

“Chloe, don’t listen to them, they’re lying, it’s a setup—!” Jason babbled frantically, rushing around the table toward her, his hands outstretched in a pathetic plea.

Chloe didn't let him touch her. With a sharp cry of absolute rage, she raised her hand and delivered a resounding slap across Jason’s face that echoed loudly off the boardroom walls.

The senior directors sat frozen in stunned silence, watching their golden-boy project manager completely implode in real time.
