Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a Counter-StrikeBy 3:00 AM, Dr. Sterling had stabilized Emma, administering intravenous painkillers and wrapping her fractured ribs in tight medical binding. She had drifted into a heavy, chemically induced sleep in a guest suite on the second floor, guarded by two of Marco’s most trusted men stationed outside her door.

Down in my private basement study—a soundproofed, secure chamber lined with oak bookshelves and communication arrays—Marco and my lead intelligence director, Julian Vance, stood before a massive digital display map of New York City.

"Kolov isn't operating out of his usual social clubs tonight," Julian reported, tapping a glowing red point on the map representing a massive, fortified warehouse complex in the industrial sector of Long Island City. "After his men completed the hit on Emma, they retreated to his primary distribution hub. They’re celebrating, boss. They think they’ve landed a psychological blow without firing a shot at us directly."

I poured two fingers of unaged rye whiskey into a heavy crystal glass, swirling the amber liquid without drinking. My face was a mask of cold, unreadable marble.

"How many men does Kolov have stationed at the Long Island City warehouse?" I asked quietly.

"Between thirty and forty heavy enforcers," Marco answered, checking the clip of his Sig Sauer P226. "Plus automated perimeter security, reinforced steel doors, and a private security detail imported straight out of Eastern Europe. It’s a fortress, Dominic. Taking it by force won't be a firefight; it’ll be a military engagement."

"Good," I said, setting the glass down with a sharp clink that echoed in the quiet room. "Because I don't intend to negotiate terms."

"What’s the play?" Julian asked, his fingers hovering over the tactical keyboard. "Do we hit the docks? Do we shut down his money-laundering fronts in Manhattan first?"

"No," I replied, walking slowly toward the tactical map. "If we dismantle his assets one by one, he goes into hiding. He crawls back into some hole in Brighton Beach or flees the country. I don't just want to disrupt his business, Julian. I want to amputate his influence so completely that every syndicate leader from here to Boston watches and learns what happens when someone touches a person under my roof."

I pointed a finger directly at the red glowing dot representing the Long Island City warehouse.

"We strike tonight. Not tomorrow morning, not after a committee meeting. Tonight, while they think they are safe behind reinforced steel and imported guards."

"We'll need heavy gear," Marco muttered, a dark, eager grin touching the corner of his mouth. "Kolov's boys carry automatic weaponry. Standard handguns won't cut through their body armor."

"Take everything you need from the primary armorage," I instructed. "And Julian? I want every single financial account, shell corporation, and cryptocurrency wallet tied to Viktor Kolov frozen, seized, or redirected by 5:00 AM. If he survives the night, he shouldn't have a single dollar left to buy a cup of coffee."

Julian’s eyes widened slightly in admiration. "Consider it done, boss. I’ll route his liquid capital through our subsidiary accounts before his accountants even realize the servers are blinking red."

"Move," I commanded.

Within twenty minutes, four black, unmarked tactical vans rolled out of the subterranean garage of my Manhattan estate, slipping silently into the rainy labyrinth of the city streets. I sat in the lead vehicle beside Marco, wearing a simple black cashmere turtleneck and dark wool trousers, a customized Browning Hi-Power pistol resting in a leather shoulder holster beneath my arm.

The rain lashed against the windshield, blurring the neon lights of the Queensboro Bridge into long, bleeding streaks of red and yellow.

As we crossed the East River, I thought about Emma lying upstairs in my guest room—her face bruised into a palette of purple and black, her quiet dignity shattered by men who viewed human life as mere collateral damage. Kolov had wanted to send a message to Dominic Castellano.

I was about to reply with an entire dictionary written in blood and steel.
