Chapter 6 - Ashes to EmpiresSix months later, the corporate landscape of Chicago had been completely rewritten.

The name Vale Holdings—once a dominant force in Midwestern real estate—had been dissolved, liquidated, and scrubbed from the commercial registries. Its assets had been quietly absorbed into Vance Global Logistics, and the downtown skyscraper where Adrian once held his luxurious corner office now housed a charitable foundation dedicated to supporting single mothers and neonatal research.

As for Adrian Vale?

Last I heard, he had skipped town under a mountain of personal debt, working a low-wage job in a distant state under an assumed name, constantly looking over his shoulder for creditors and federal investigators.

Celeste Monroe had fled to Europe within weeks of the collapse, her social media accounts deleted and her expensive wardrobe auctioned off to pay down legal retainers.

And me?

I stood on the expansive stone balcony of our North Barrington estate, watching the crisp autumn leaves swirl across the manicured lawn. The morning air was sharp, fresh, and filled with the scent of pine and new beginnings.

Inside the nursery, Alexander, Julian, and Leo were six months old now—active, giggling, strong, and thriving beyond measure. They had my father’s determined eyes, my mother’s resilient spirit, and a future so bright and secure that no enemy could ever touch them.

My phone buzzed on the patio table beside my coffee cup.

It was a notification from my investment portfolio manager confirming the successful acquisition of a major commercial port facility in Seattle—a project I was leading independently under my maiden name, Evelyn Vance.

Footsteps approached softly behind me, followed by the familiar, comforting warmth of my father wrapping a cashmere shawl around my shoulders.

""Thinking about the past?"" my father asked quietly, leaning against the balcony railing beside me.

I took a sip of my coffee, smiling as I watched a flock of birds soar gracefully across the brilliant blue Chicago sky.

""Not at all, Dad,"" I replied, my voice light and entirely unburdened. ""I was just thinking about how wonderful it is to finally build an empire of my own.""

My father chuckled, pulling me into a proud, protective hug. ""You didn't just build an empire, sweetheart. You proved that when a queen is betrayed, she doesn't cry—she reclaims the throne.""
