Chapter 7 - The Unbroken HorizonThree months later, the corporate landscape of Chicago had settled into a profound, unshakable peace.

The internal leak had been permanently sealed, Marcus Vance’s criminal network dismantled by federal authorities using the digital evidence I had compiled, and Vance-Whitmore Logistics officially rebranded as Marino-Davis Global Enterprises.

My salary had been tripled, complete with a corner office on the fifty-fifth floor, a private parking space, and an executive title that finally matched the monumental work I had been doing all along.

And St. Jude’s Residential Care facility? Their bills were paid in full, with a permanent endowment fund established in Liam’s name, ensuring he would receive the absolute best specialized care for the rest of his life.

On a bright, crisp Friday afternoon in late October, I sat behind my grand mahogany desk overlooking the breathtaking skyline of Chicago, reviewing a final batch of shipping manifests.

A soft knock sounded at my door.

Before I could answer, Dante walked in. He wasn't carrying files or security reports. Instead, he held two cups of coffee from the terrible lobby machine downstairs—along with a small, elegant velvet box.

He walked over to my desk, set the coffee cups down, and placed the velvet box right in the center of my paperwork.

I looked up, raising an eyebrow. “What’s this? More IRS compliance forms?”

“Open it,” Dante said, a rare, genuine smile curving his lips—a smile that held zero darkness, only a quiet, radiant warmth that had taken nine years to return to the world.

I reached out, popped open the velvet lid, and stared down at what rested inside.

It wasn't a corporate key or a legal document. It was a stunning vintage diamond ring that caught the afternoon sunlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows, flashing with brilliant, clear light.

“Dante...” I whispered, my breath catching in my throat.

“Nine years ago, I thought I lost everything worth living for,” Dante said quietly, leaning his hands on the edge of my desk, his dark eyes looking down at me with an absolute, unwavering devotion. “I built an empire out of cold stone because I didn't think I deserved to feel anything else. And then a stubborn, brilliant woman walked into a room full of armed men complaining about a Persian rug and completely upended my entire world.”

He reached out, taking my hand in his, his thumb gently brushing against my skin.

“You saved my company, Emily. But more than that... you brought me back to life.”

I looked up into his eyes, feeling a profound, unshakeable happiness settle deep into my soul.

“I suppose,” I said with a soft, teasing smile, “this means my job description officially includes being your wife?”

Dante’s smile widened, a deep, resonant laugh escaping his chest as he pulled me up out of my chair and into his arms.

“Only if you promise to keep managing the cleaning bills,” he whispered against my lips.

“Deal,” I murmured, and as his lips met mine against the backdrop of the golden Chicago skyline, I knew that for the first time in my life, every single piece had finally fallen perfectly into place.
