Chapter 3 - The Matriarch's CommandDaniel’s fingers trembled as he slid the screen to answer, pressing the speakerphone button and placing the device on my desk between us.

"Daniel!" Victoria Ashford's sharp, aristocratic voice echoed cleanly through the high-ceilinged office, laced with her signature patronizing authority. "Where on earth are you? The West Coast regional directors have been waiting in the conference room at the Four Seasons for forty-five minutes!"

Daniel didn't answer immediately. He stared at the glowing screen, his jaw set in a hard, tight line.

"Daniel, are you listening to me?" Victoria pressed, her tone sharpening. "Your brother Julian just informed me that Sterling Global secured the municipal shipping rights for the Seattle harbor. How could you allow Ethan Sterling to pull that contract out from under us?!"

"I didn't lose the contract to Ethan Sterling, Mother," Daniel spoke, his voice low, flat, and hollow. "I lost it to Claire."

A sharp, suffocating silence dropped over the line.

"What did you say?" Victoria demanded, her composure fracturing slightly. "Claire? What ridiculous nonsense are you talking about?"

"Claire Vance is the Chief Operating Officer of Sterling Global, Mother," Daniel revealed, his dark eyes fixed on my face. "She built the regional logistics framework that just stripped our family of thirty percent of our West Coast distribution."

A cold gasp sounded over the speaker.

"That... that's impossible!" Victoria snapped, her voice rising into an arrogant, shrill register. "She was a nobody! A girl with no family, no connections, and no money! She couldn't build a logistics framework if her life depended on it! She's obviously using Sterling's name to get back at us!"

Daniel let out a dry, bitter laugh—a sound so full of self-loathing it cut through the room like a knife.

"She didn't use anyone, Mother," Daniel said. "She did it on her own. While you were busy having my staff erase her from my penthouse... while you were hiding the letter she left on my desk."

Victoria went dead silent for three long seconds.

"So you found the letter," Victoria said smoothly, her tone shifting effortlessly back into cold, calculating manipulation. "Good. Then you know she tried to extort us before she left. She wanted money, Daniel. That girl was a gold-digger from the day you brought her to the estate."

"She didn't ask for money, Victoria!" Daniel roared, slamming his palm flat against my desk, making the bronze plaque rattle. "She was pregnant! She was carrying my twin daughters!"

Another heavy silence descended on the call.

"Twins...?" Victoria murmured, a sudden, sharp calculation entering her tone. "Two girls?"

"Yes," Daniel choked out. "My daughters. Two years old."

"Well," Victoria spoke, her voice instantly hardening back into iron, devoid of a single drop of remorse or affection. "If they are Ashfords, then they belong in Manhattan. I will have our legal team file an emergency custody petition in federal court by tomorrow morning. A woman working for our primary competitor is not fit to raise the heirs to the Ashford trust."

I leaned over the desk, my face inches from the speakerphone.

"Try it, Victoria," I spoke, my voice carried with a quiet, terrifying authority that made Daniel freeze in his tracks. "File your custody petition. And by four o'clock tomorrow afternoon, I will release the complete internal audit of the Ashford Offshore Relief Fund to the Securities and Exchange Commission."

The silence over the phone was so absolute you could hear the rain tapping against the glass windows behind me.

"Claire...?" Victoria whispered, her voice laced with a sudden, genuine terror.

"I kept the secondary ledger, Victoria," I revealed deadpan. "The one your late husband used to fund his shell companies in Grand Cayman. I have the bank statements, the forged signatures, and the wire transfers. If you step foot in Seattle, or if you send a single lawyer near my daughters... I will dismantle your entire family empire before sunrise."

I reached out and tapped the red button, ending the call.
