Chapter 1 - The Trust on the TableThe string quartet’s soft rendition of a romantic waltz seemed to fade into a hollow, background hum as Daniel unfolded the heavy cream document from his tuxedo jacket.

The head table of the grand ballroom at the St. Regis was draped in white silk, crystal goblets, and cascades of fresh white roses. Surrounding us were my parents, my sister Chloe, Daniel’s parents—who sat across from us looking entirely unbothered—and eight close relatives.
My mother, Eleanor, held her champagne glass suspended in mid-air. The sharp, triumphant smile she had worn moments ago began to fracture around the corners of her eyes.
"A trust agreement?" Eleanor sneered softly, setting her glass down onto the linen tablecloth with a sharp clack. "Daniel, dear, don't be absurd. Cars are personal property. His family gave it to Mia, which means it belongs to our family's assets. As her mother, I have the right to manage how our family distributes major items. Chloe's vehicle was totaled last month. It only makes logical sense."
"Logic has nothing to do with theft, Eleanor," Daniel replied smoothly.
His voice didn't rise. He didn't slam his hand on the table or make a scene. He simply stood tall in his tailored black tuxedo, six-foot-two of unyielding composure, unfolding the third page of the document.
"The silver SUV," Daniel continued, his dark gray eyes fixing onto my mother with a terrifying, calm intensity, "was purchased through the Sterling Private Family Trust. The title is held under an irrevocable individual sub-trust registered exclusively under Mia’s legal name, managed by an independent corporate trustee."
Chloe’s laugh died in her throat. She looked from Daniel to my mother, her manicured fingers tightening around her cloth napkin. "Wait... what does that mean? Mom, you said you talked to the dealership!"
"I spoke with the sales manager this morning!" Eleanor insisted, her voice rising half an octave, drawing the attention of two nearby guest tables. "He said the title transfer paperwork could be processed with a spousal or parental authorization!"
Daniel’s father, Arthur Sterling—a senior partner at one of the city's premier corporate law firms—took a slow sip of his Cabernet, set his glass down, and looked directly at my mother.
"The sales manager you spoke with, Eleanor," Arthur chimed in, his baritone voice dripping with quiet authority, "was suspended three hours ago for attempting to access a locked corporate account without authorization. My firm filed a formal notice with the dealership's corporate board at noon."
My mother went dead pale. The color drained from her cheeks, leaving her heavy makeup looking powdery and unnatural under the warm glow of the chandeliers.
"You... you set a trap?" Chloe squeaked out, her voice cracking into a high-pitched whine. "On Mia's wedding day?!"
"No, Chloe," I spoke up, my voice trembling slightly before finding its footing.

I looked straight at my sister—the sister who had taken my clothes, my savings from my summer job, and my childhood bedroom without ever saying thank you.
"You set the trap for yourselves," I said, every word dropping like a lead weight onto the table. "The moment you saw something that belonged to me, you assumed you could just take it. Just like you always do."
