Chapter 3 - The Gala at the DrakeOn Saturday evening, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a glittering sea of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and Chicago’s most powerful elite.

The occasion was the annual charity gala hosted by Michael Sterling—Daniel’s primary business partner and childhood friend. Over three hundred politicians, judges, corporate executives, and high-society figures filled the room.
Vanessa Cole stood near the primary champagne tower wearing a sweeping red silk dress, holding court among three entertainment journalists, her laughter ringing light and musical across the room.
She had spent two days preparing for this night, convincing herself that with Emily out of the picture, she would finally step into her rightful place beside Daniel as the future queen of the Blackwood empire.
The double doors at the main entrance were pushed open by two broad-shouldered security guards.
Daniel walked into the ballroom.
He wore an immaculate dark tuxedo, his dark hair neatly styled, his posture sovereign, cold, and absolute. But as he walked down the center aisle, the surrounding socialites whispered nervously among themselves.
He was alone.
There was no radiant wife on his arm. No delicate hand resting on his sleeve. He walked like a man marching into a war zone, his gray eyes scanning the room with a cold, terrifying intensity that made people step back from his path.
Vanessa’s eyes lit up. She smoothed down her red dress, stepped away from her journalists, and glided smoothly toward him with a triumphant, radiant smile.
"Daniel," Vanessa spoke softly, her voice dripping with warmth as she reached out to rest her hand comfortably on his forearm. "I heard you arrived without a date. Michael said—"
Daniel stopped dead in his tracks.
He didn't look at her dress. He didn't smile. He looked down at her hand resting on his sleeve as if an insect had landed on his suit.
"Take your hand off my arm, Vanessa," Daniel commanded softly.
The words weren't yelled, but they dropped into the quiet space around them like heavy blocks of frozen iron.
Vanessa’s radiant smile froze. The color drained from her cheeks as the surrounding socialites turned to stare at them in utter shock.
"Daniel...?" Vanessa stammered, her voice cracking into a high, humiliated squeak. "What... what are you talking about? I thought—"
"I told you four days ago that Emily is my wife," Daniel said, his voice carrying cleanly across the silent circle of onlookers. "You called her phone from my house. You pushed yourself into my private life. And because of your pathetic, attention-seeking games... my wife walked out of my home."
Vanessa gasped, tears of pure, unbearable humiliation welling in her eyes as the watching socialites began whispering behind their crystal glasses.

"I paid twenty million dollars to fund your movie, Vanessa," Daniel added, his gray eyes burning with an absolute, terrifying coldness. "And as of six o'clock tonight, my legal team has pulled every dollar of that investment. You are finished in this city."
He turned on his heel without another word, walking straight out through the grand double doors, leaving the famous actress standing alone in her red dress in total, public ruin.
