Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Lost VowsBy 2:00 AM, the top-floor command suite at The Moretti Tower on Michigan Avenue was under an impenetrable tactical lockdown.

Outside the private elevator banks, twenty armed Vance Security operators guarded every corridor. Inside, four-year-old Lily was fast asleep in a plush velvet armchair, wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, holding her plastic toy earpiece close to her cheek. Rosa sat beside her, sipping hot chamomile tea, tears of relief still drying on her delicate face.
In the center of the executive study, sitting around a black granite conference table, were me, Marcus Vance, and Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton.
Bridget opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers and wiretap transcripts flat onto the table before me:
"Vincent, Rosa," Bridget spoke crisp and fast, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit into Dominic Cole’s private accounts and the security footage is complete."
I leaned over the table, my hands planted flat on the polished granite, my dark gray eyes burning with an apocalyptic, predatory fire. "Explain it."
Bridget tapped the digital displays:
THE SECURITY FEED PROOF: High-definition 4K footage from the laundry corridor showing Dominic Cole slipping Isabella’s gold watch directly into Rosa’s apron pocket at 2:14 P.M., his gold lion ring distinctly scratching her copper apron button.
THE HOMICIDE & SABOTAGE DOSSIER: Newly unsealed wiretaps capturing Dominic Cole communicating six years ago with rival syndicate Don Victor Vane—proving Dominic tipped off the gunmen who ambushed Isabella’s vehicle.
THE EMBEZZLEMENT LOG: Proof that Dominic Cole systematically diverted $45 million from the Moretti Maritime Freight Trust into offshore Panamanian shell accounts over four years, framing domestic staff to cover his operational tracks.
My breath stopped in my chest.
My knuckles turned stark white against the granite counter.
Six years.
For six long years, I had mourned my late wife Isabella, believing her death was an unavoidable tragedy executed by external enemies. I had kept her gold watch in my desk drawer, weeping in the dark, while the snake sitting at my left table had not only set up her murder but was now trying to frame an innocent housemaid and her four-year-old daughter to cover his theft of my maritime trust.
"Where is Dominic tonight, Marcus?" I asked softly, my voice dropping into a register of deathly, absolute resolve.
"He fled to his fortified estate in Lake Forest, boss," Marcus Vance reported flatly. "He brought thirty armed renegade enforcers and contacted Victor Vane to request immediate extraction to South America."
I looked over at small Lily asleep in the chair, then down at Isabella’s gold watch resting on the table—engraved with the words: Come home to me.
May you like
I slowly stood up, smoothing the front of my dark bespoke charcoal suit jacket.
"Order the convoy, Marcus," I commanded ice-cold. "Tonight, my new bodyguard and I tear Dominic Cole's world to the ground."
