Chapter 4 - The Audit of Seven YearsThe room cleared. Marcus Vance remained standing near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, his arms crossed over his chest, his dark eyes monitoring Alexander's every breath like a hawk watching a viper.

Alexander took two steps closer to the table, stopping five feet away, his broad frame trembling as he stared at my face.

"Claire," Alexander rasped out, his voice shaking uncontrollably. "Whatever you heard on that balcony... it wasn't what you think. My father... my father forced the arrangement with Sophia years ago before I met you! Isabella was sick! She was dying! I was trying to save a child's life!"

"By using my baby?" I asked, my voice smooth as silk and cold as winter ice. "By lying to me for seven years? By telling your father that the Moretti empire belongs to Sophia's daughter while planning an 'automobile accident' for me on Lake Shore Drive?"

Alexander went paper-white. His jaw sagged open, his gray eyes dilating in pure, unadulterated horror.

"W-What...?" Alexander stammered, taking a frantic step backward. "Car accident?! What are you talking about?!"

"Look at the display, Alexander," I said softly, gesturing toward the wall monitor.

Marcus Vance tapped his tablet, projecting intercepted voice recordings taken from Richard Moretti’s private office in Chicago forty-eight hours earlier:

[RICHARD MORETTI]: "Once the cord blood is extracted and shipped to Geneva, we stage a brake failure on Claire's SUV near the river. The Bennett trust dies with her, and Alexander inherits the maritime proxy clean."

Alexander stared at the audio waveform, his breath coming in short, agonizing gasps.

"No..." Alexander whispered, dropping flat onto his knees right on the plush carpet of the Mayfair boardroom, burying his face in his hands as he wept tears of absolute, self-directed horror. "No... God... no... I didn't know... I swear on my life, Claire, I didn't know he planned to hurt you!"

"It doesn't matter whether you knew, Alexander," I said, stepping out from behind the table, standing over him as he knelt on the floor. "You created the environment that allowed him to treat my children and me as disposable livestock. You let your mistress live in a villa in Zurich while I sat in your Lake Forest mansion believing I was your queen."

"I loved you!" Alexander thundered softly, lifting his wet, devastated face to look into my eyes. "I fell in love with you three months after we married! Every gift... every kiss... every night I held you... that wasn't a lie, Claire! I swear to you, you became my entire world!"

I looked down at the feared Don of Chicago weeping at my feet, feeling no hatred, no anger—only a vast, weightless clarity.

"If I was your entire world, Alexander," I whispered, "you wouldn't have built a secret kingdom for another woman behind my back."

Bridget Colton re-entered the room, sliding a stack of court-stamped European legal documents flat onto the table beside his trembling hand:

SUMMARY DIVORCE PETITION: Absolute dissolution of marriage filed under UK international jurisdiction, requesting zero financial alimony, retaining complete custody of Lily and Noah.

MARITIME EQUITY SEIZURE: Legal enforcement of the Bennett Trust’s fifty-one percent controlling equity, locking Moretti Global out of all European ports.

RESTRAINING ORDER: A permanent, legally enforced international order barring Alexander Moretti and Richard Moretti from coming within one thousand yards of Claire Bennett or her children.

"Sign the papers, Alexander," I said softly. "Or watch Marcus Vance hand these forensic arson files to the United States Department of Justice by six o'clock tonight."

Alexander looked at the fountain pen lying on the table. Tears dripped flat onto the parchment paper as he reached out his trembling fingers, signing his name across the bottom line of every single document, surrendering his marriage, his control over my children, and forty percent of his corporate empire in a single, shattered moment.
