Chapter 3 - The Scramble of the ParasiteBy 1:00 p.m. that afternoon, the news had shattered Nathan’s carefully constructed world.

Sloane Vale’s luxurious design studio on 5th Avenue—the space Nathan had secretly funded using co-signed Sterling credit lines—was shut down. County marshals had placed yellow legal tape across the glass doors, citing emergency asset freezes related to property fraud.

My phone rang continuously. Nathan tried calling fourteen times. When I didn't answer, he sent frantic text messages:

Evie, please. Talk to me.

You are destroying my business reputation!

Sloane is having a panic attack. Undo the freeze!

I ignored every single one of them. Instead, I sat in the sunny conservatory of my grandmother’s original townhome in Upper East, sipping warm chamomile tea while listening to Margaret report on the financial fallout.

"Nathan used his position as co-director of your joint charity fund to guarantee Sloane’s commercial loans," Margaret said, reviewing a stack of bank audits. "He told the lenders that you had approved a five-million-dollar capital injection into Sloane Vale Interiors."

"I never signed any loan guarantees," I said calmly.

"We know," Margaret replied. "He forged your signature, Evie. He used an old digital signature file from your 2024 tax returns. He thought because you were focused on your pregnancy, you would never look at the quarterly audit reports."

A soft knock sounded at the conservatory door. My personal assistant, Clara—whom I had named my daughter after—stepped inside.

"Mrs. Vance... Miss Vale is downstairs in the courtyard," Clara said cautiously. "She is demanding to see you. Security is preparing to remove her, but she's causing a public scene."

I looked at Margaret, who raised an eyebrow.

"Let her up, Clara," I said, setting my teacup down. "It's time Sloane learned that designing rooms doesn't mean you know how to build a life."

Three minutes later, Sloane stormed into the conservatory.

She was no longer wearing the pristine ivory dress from the dinner party. Her hair was disheveled, her designer mascara was smudged, and she clutched an expensive leather handbag like a weapon.

"You insane bitch!" Sloane shrieked, advancing toward me. "You froze my business accounts! You locked my studio! Do you have any idea how many high-profile clients I have waiting for consultations today?"

Margaret stepped smoothly between us, holding up a warning hand. "One step closer, Miss Vale, and you will be arrested for felony harassment."

Sloane stopped, her breathing ragged. She looked past Margaret, staring at my pregnant belly with pure hatred.

"Nathan doesn't love you, Evie!" Sloane spat out, her voice trembling with fury. "He hasn't loved you for years! He calls you a boring, lifeless heiress who sits in her room painting flowers while he does all the real work! He came to my bed because you couldn't even keep him interested!"

I listened to her venom. A few months ago, those words would have broken my heart. They would have sent me into a spiral of self-doubt and grief.

Now? They felt like the meaningless buzz of a mosquito.

"If Nathan loves you so much, Sloane," I said quietly, standing up from my chair and walking slowly toward her, "then why did he use your business as the legal shield when he forged my signature?"

Sloane froze. "What?"

"Nathan didn't put your name on those loan documents to elevate you," I explained, letting out a soft, genuine laugh. "He put your name on them so that if the Sterling Trust ever audited the accounts, you would take the fall for bank fraud while he claimed to be an innocent victim of your manipulative design fees."

Sloane’s face went completely blank. "No... no, Nathan promised me... he said we were going to buy the Hamptons estate once you signed the trust updates..."

"Look at your phone, Sloane," Margaret said dryly.

Sloane pulled out her phone with trembling hands. A fresh news notification from Bloomberg Real Estate popped up on her screen:

"Vance Capital Director Nathan Vance Issues Public Statement Blaming 'Third-Party Contractor Sloane Vale' for Unauthorized Financial Discrepancies in Sterling Trust Properties."

Sloane dropped her phone onto the Persian rug. The glass shattered.

Nathan had thrown her under the bus the second the heat reached his collar.
