Chapter 4 - The EvictionThirty minutes before Daniel’s world imploded in the boardroom, the morning fog rolled softly over the rugged coastline of Carmel-by-the-Sea.

In the master bedroom of the oceanfront estate, Victoria Sterling lounged in a silk robe, sipping an espresso while reviewing her laptop screen. She was waiting for Daniel’s confirmation text from the boardroom to hit the final authorization button on a multi-million-dollar wire transfer to Panama.

Suddenly, the heavy front gates of the estate buzzed open.

Victoria frowned, setting her espresso down. She walked to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, expecting to see a delivery driver or a gardener.

Instead, three official vehicles pulled into the circular driveway: two local sheriff squad cars and a large moving van accompanied by a flatbed tow truck.

Victoria’s heart skipped a beat. She hurried downstairs, tying her robe tightly around her waist as she threw the heavy timber front door open.

A female deputy sheriff stood on the porch, holding a yellow clipboard and an official court order, while two movers began setting up caution cones near the entrance.

"Can I help you?" Victoria demanded, her voice sharp and arrogant. "This is private property. You are trespassing!"

"Victoria Sterling?" the deputy asked calmly.

"Yes. What is the meaning of this?"

"I am Deputy Miller with the Monterey County Sheriff's Department," the officer stated, handing her a thick packet of legal papers. "We are executing an emergency Writ of Possession and Asset Seizure issued by the Superior Court of California, filed on behalf of the Hartwell Family Dynasty Trust."

Victoria blinked, her arrogant posture instantly wavering. "The... the Hartwell Trust? That's impossible. My partner owns this house!"

"This property was purchased using $1.8 million embezzled directly from the Hartwell Memorial Scholarship Foundation," the deputy explained coldly, gesturing to the movers behind her. "The court has placed an immediate lis pendens lien on the estate. The property is officially under state custody. You have twenty minutes to gather your personal clothing and leave the premises."

"Twenty minutes?!" Victoria shrieked, her voice echoing across the courtyard. "I have a four-year-old child inside! You can't put us out on the street! I am calling my lawyer!"

"You can call whoever you like, Ms. Sterling," the deputy replied without an ounce of sympathy. "But if you refuse to vacate the premises within twenty minutes, you will be arrested for trespass on seized corporate property."

Behind the deputy, the flatbed tow truck reversed up the driveway, its metal chains clanking loudly. A mechanic hooked the winch to the front bumper of Victoria’s custom white Porsche SUV—a gift Daniel had bought her six months ago.

"Stop! Touch that car and I'll sue you into oblivion!" Victoria screamed, running toward the tow truck.

"The vehicle was also purchased with funds drawn from a fraudulent line of credit under Hartwell Aerospace," the deputy noted, stepping in front of her to block her path. "It is subject to immediate asset forfeiture."

Panicking, Victoria pulled her phone out and dialed Daniel’s private cell number frantically.

It rang once. Twice. Three times.

Then it went straight to voicemail: "Hi, you've reached Daniel Hartwell. Please leave a message..."

"Daniel! Answer the phone!" Victoria screamed into the speaker, her voice trembling with hysteria as movers began carrying her designer furniture and luggage out through the front door onto the driveway. "The police are here! They're taking the house! They're taking my car! What did you do?! What happened to the signature?!"

She slammed her phone down and opened her banking application, attempting to manually force the wire transfer of her remaining liquid balance into her Panama shell account before it was too late.

She typed in her secure PIN, entered the transfer amount, and slammed her finger on the submit button.

A bold red warning banner flashed across her screen:

TRANSACTION DENIED.

ACCOUNT FROZEN BY FEDERAL ORDER (DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY - AML TASKFORCE).

PLEASE CONTACT LEGAL COUNSEL.

Victoria’s phone dropped onto the stone patio, the screen shattering against the tiles. She fell to her knees, clutching her head as the full weight of the trap slammed closed around her.

She had built her entire future on Daniel’s promises—his promises of forty million dollars, a life of luxury in South America, and absolute safety.

In a single morning, she had gone from living in a ten-million-dollar oceanfront estate to standing on the side of a road with a few suitcases, a revoked bank account, and an impending federal indictment for money laundering.

And miles away, in the boardroom of Hartwell Aerospace, Daniel was about to realize that his nightmare had only just begun.
