Chapter 2 - The Mask SlipsTristan burst through the curtain of the trauma bay, his tailored wool coat unbuttoned, his dark hair artfully messy, his face wearing a masterclass expression of distraught, loving panic.

"Reese! Oh, thank God!" Tristan cried out, rushing toward my bed with his hands outstretched. "The apartment building guard told me you left in an Uber! I came as fast as I could! Sweetheart, what's wrong with your leg?!"
He reached out to grab my hand, but the lead police officer stepped smoothly into his path, placing a broad, firm palm flat against Tristan’s chest, halting him mid-stride.
"Step back, Mr. Vance," the officer commanded cleanly.
Tristan blinked, his sorrowful, worried expression freezing for a split second before transforming into a sharp, indignant frown.
"Excuse me?" Tristan scoffed, pointing a finger at the officer. "I am her husband! I am her legal healthcare proxy! I demand to know what treatment you are performing on my wife!"
"Your proxy rights have been temporarily suspended under Section 42 of the Emergency Medical Protection Act, Mr. Vance," Dr. Mensah interjected, stepping between Tristan and my bed, holding a thick file. "Due to the presence of foreign hazardous materials found inside Mrs. Vance’s wound."
Tristan’s jaw twitched. A subtle, terrifying shift occurred behind his blue eyes—the phony warmth evaporating into the cold, calculating arrogance I had lived with for four years.
"Hazardous materials?" Tristan chuckled dryly, shaking his head with condescending pity. "Doctor, my wife has a history of severe health anxiety and self-harming tendencies. She probably scratched herself with an old garden tool in our storage unit. She’s deluded from her fever. Reese, tell them!"
He looked over Dr. Mensah’s shoulder, his eyes locking onto mine with a dark, silent threat that made my skin crawl.
Remember who has the power, his eyes whispered. Remember who controls the money, the apartment, your life.
Four years of keeping the peace. Four years of believing his subtle put-downs, his gaslighting, his insistence that I was fragile, stupid, and helpless.
I looked straight into his cold, blue eyes, pulled my oxygen mask down, and spoke with a clarity that cut through the room like a razor.
"I didn't touch the garden tools, Tristan," I declared, my voice ringing clear despite my weakness. "You gave me those shoes last Tuesday. You put the glass in the heel. And you canceled my ride tonight because you wanted me to die in that bed."
The room went deathly silent.
Tristan’s face drained of color, then flushed a dark, angry crimson. "You ungrateful little lunatic! After everything I've done for you! You’re out of your mind!"
"Tristan Vance," the secondary police officer announced, stepping behind him, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and tampering with hazardous chemical substances."
"Don't touch me!" Tristan roared, struggling violently as the officers forced his arms behind his back, the metallic CLICK of the cuffs echoing loudly through the bay. "Call my lawyer! I am Tristan Vance! You can't do this to me!"

"Get him out of my trauma unit," Dr. Mensah ordered deadpan.
As the officers dragged his shouting, cursing frame down the hallway, I collapsed back onto my pillows, tears streaming down my face, feeling the first real breath of freedom flood into my lungs.
