Chapter 5 - The Mentor’s TreacheryI stared at Richard Vance, the cold fury inside me crystallizing into a razor-sharp focus. Five years ago, Richard had tried to force a hostile buyout of my initial trucking fleet through predatory loan structures. I had outmaneuvered him legally, saved my company, and driven him out of the state in disgrace.

I had thought he was gone for good. I never imagined he had spent the last five years cultivating a relationship with my gullible, bitter mother, turning her into a Trojan horse inside my own home.

“You,” I said quietly, stepping forward until I was inches away from him. “You’re behind the attack on my wife.”

Richard didn't flinch. He smiled, his eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction.

“Attack? Oh, Austin, you’re being so dramatic,” Richard chuckled softly, gesturing toward my office. “Your mother came to me six months ago complaining that you were neglecting her financial security for a woman who didn't come from ‘proper stock.’ She wanted to ensure the family fortune stayed where it belonged. I simply gave her the legal tools to reclaim what was rightfully hers. Irene was just an inconvenient obstacle standing in the way of a clean family transfer.”

“She is pregnant, Richard,” I whispered, my voice trembling with suppressed rage. “Your thugs—your lawyers—they terrorized her, starved her, and tried to murder her unborn children.”

“Prove it,” Richard challenged smoothly, spreading his hands. “Police reports show a domestic dispute over property theft. Surveillance footage from inside the master bedroom? Unfortunately, private cloud recordings obtained without explicit mutual consent are inadmissible in corporate court. As far as the Paradise Valley municipal judge is concerned, your mother is a concerned parent exercising her legal shareholder rights, and you are a volatile husband experiencing a mental breakdown.”

He leaned in close, his voice dropping to a venomous hiss.

“By sundown, the board will formally vote to strip you of your CEO title, freeze your personal bank accounts, and evict you from your estate. You’ll be broke, ruined, and unemployable before the week is out. Enjoy your hospital vigil, Austin. Because by the time your wife wakes up, you won’t even have a bed to bring her home to.”

Richard turned on his heel, strutting back into my office and slamming the heavy oak door in my face.

David Miller looked at me, his eyes wide with panic. “Austin... what do we do? If they freeze our accounts, payroll bounces tomorrow morning. Our entire logistics network will grind to a halt within twenty-four hours.”

I stood in the quiet hallway, watching the golden afternoon sun reflect off the glass corporate logo bearing my family name.

Richard thought he had won. He thought my mother’s greed and my blind trust were weaknesses he could exploit to destroy everything I had built.

He didn't know the truth about my family history. He didn't know that long before I built Wentworth Logistics, long before I wore tailored Italian suits and sat in glass corner offices, I grew up in the brutal, cutthroat shipping docks of the eastern seaboard—where men like Richard Vance didn't survive a second round.

“David,” I said, turning to my CFO with a cold, absolute calm that made him step back in surprise.

“Y-yes, Austin?”

“Call our primary shipping partners in Chicago and Rotterdam. Tell them to execute Protocol Zero immediately.”

David gasped, turning pale. “Protocol Zero? Austin, that... that triggers an immediate, irreversible liquidation of all subsidiary logistics assets across three continents! It will wipe out Vanguard Capital’s leveraged buyouts overnight, but it will also cost us millions in emergency restructuring fees!”

“Do it,” I commanded, my eyes locking onto the frosted glass of my office door. “Let them have the empty shell of this building. By the time Richard finishes celebrating his victory, he’ll realize he just inherited a trillion-dollar company holding nothing but empty boxes and federal audit warrants.”
