Chapter 1 - The Contract of VengeanceThe quiet hotel hallway suddenly felt as small as an interrogation room.

The low hum of the jazz orchestra and the muted chatter of two hundred guests echoed from the grand ballroom, but all I could hear was the steady, rhythmic beat of my own heart against my ribs.
"Marry me instead."
The three words hung between us like a loaded gun.
Nikolai Moretti didn't flinch. He took a slow, deliberate sip of his amber whiskey, his piercing, storm-gray eyes locked onto mine. There was no hesitation in his stance, no crack in his formidable aura. He stood like a man who had calculated every outcome before even opening his mouth.
"You're out of your mind," I breathed, my hands clenching into tight fists at my sides. "Your brother just publicly humiliated me in front of every major family in Chicago, and your solution is for me to marry you?"
"Julian didn't just humiliate you, Evelyn," Nikolai said smoothly, taking a single step closer. The subtle, intoxicating scent of cedarwood, rich leather, and expensive bourbon enveloped me. "He humiliated your family, and more importantly, he broke an agreement between the Harts and the Morettis that my father personally oversaw."
I let out a dry, bitter laugh. "My father doesn't care about the broken agreement! Did you see him in there? He mouthed that it was 'for the best.' My own mother told me not to embarrass them! They are thrilled Serena gets to be a Moretti bride."
"Your father is a coward who thinks with his bank account," Nikolai replied, his voice dropping into a low, lethal register that made the hair on my arms stand up. "He thinks Julian is the key to securing the Moretti syndicate's backing for his real estate development in the West Loop. He doesn't realize that Julian holds zero power in our organization."
I blinked, analyzing his words. "Julian told my father he was taking over the council next month."
Nikolai’s lips curved into a dark, razor-sharp smirk. "Julian lies to make himself feel tall. My father is stepping down as head of the Chicago Syndicate in three weeks. The council requires the next Don to be married to a woman from a foundational family—a woman with intellect, poise, and zero scandals. Julian thought taking the 'pretty' sister would make him look like a romantic lead. Instead, he made himself look like an impulsive child who steals his brother's crumbs."
I stared at the man standing in front of me. Nikolai Moretti wasn't just the eldest son; he was the undisputed predator of the Midwest underworld. Where Julian was flashy and desperate for approval, Nikolai was silent, lethal, and absolute.
"And what do I get out of this fake arrangement?" I asked, my voice steadying as my survival instincts took over.
Nikolai’s dark eyes flashed with cold approval. "It won't be fake to the public, Evelyn. You will be Mrs. Nikolai Moretti. You will hold the keys to the largest fortune in the state. Your family will have to bow to you at every Sunday dinner. And when Julian realizes he threw away the crown just to hold Serena's hand... he will spend the rest of his life begging for your scraps."
A fierce, intoxicating heat flared in the center of my chest. For twenty-three years, I had played the good daughter. I had fixed Serena's mistakes, smoothed over my mother's cruelties, and worked late hours at my father's firm without a single word of praise.
Now, the most dangerous man in the city was handing me a sledgehammer and inviting me to smash their glass house to pieces.
"What are your conditions?" I asked, taking a step toward him.
Nikolai set his whiskey glass down on a nearby marble ledge. He reached out, his long, calloused fingers gently cupping the side of my jaw. His touch was surprisingly warm, sending a sharp, electric jolt straight down my spine.
"Rule number one," Nikolai whispered, his thumb lightly brushing across my lower lip. "You never lie to me. Rule number two: when we are in public, you look at me as if I am the only man who exists in your world."
"And rule number three?" I asked, my breath catching in my throat.
Nikolai leaned down, his lips hovering mere millimeters from my ear. "Rule number three, Evelyn... you don't fall in love with me. I am not a good man."
Before I could reply, the heavy double doors at the end of the hallway burst open.
Julian walked in, holding a half-empty champagne glass, his tie loosened, looking smug and triumphant.
"Evelyn! There you are," Julian sneered, stepping into the corridor. "Mother said you ran off to cry. Look, don't make a scene outside, okay? Serena was terrified you were going to—"
Julian stopped dead in his tracks.
His eyes darted from my calm, unbothered posture to the dark figure standing dangerously close to me. The smug smile froze on Julian's face, instantly replaced by a mask of sheer, unadulterated shock.
"Nikolai?" Julian stammered, taking an instinctive step back. "What... what are you doing back here with my... with Evelyn?"
May you like
Nikolai slowly turned around, dropping his hand from my jaw and stepping into the light. He looked down at his younger brother with the cold, effortless detachment of a king addressing a peasant.
"She isn't your Evelyn anymore, Julian," Nikolai said, his voice echoing through the quiet hallway like a crack of thunder. "She’s mine."
