Chapter 2 - The Sound of the WorldThe silence inside the master suite was absolute as the clock on the mantelpiece struck 2:00 AM.

For four hours, I worked tirelessly beside the vanity table, using sterile saline solution, medical gauze, and soothing antiseptic drops I retrieved from the estate’s private pharmacy room to clean the infected tissue inside Vincent’s right ear canal.

With the mechanical parasite removed, the chronic pressure that had plagued his skull for a decade vanished instantly. The dark swelling subsided, and the bleeding stopped entirely.

Vincent sat motionless on the velvet stool, his dark eyes watching my every movement through the vanity mirror with an expression of deep, unshakeable wonder.

As I gently patted the skin near his jawline dry with a soft towel, my sleeve brushed against a glass perfume bottle on the tray, knocking it over.

CLINK.

The crystal stopper struck the marble surface with a soft, sharp ring.

Vincent’s entire body went rigid.

His head snapped toward the vanity table, his dark eyes wide, pupils dilated in utter, speech-bound shock.

He looked at the crystal bottle. Then he looked up at me.

He raised his hand to his right ear, his long fingers trembling violently as he touched his jaw.

I held my breath, my chest heaving, my eyes burning with sudden tears.

"Vincent...?" I whispered, my voice barely a thread of sound amidst the quiet room.

Vincent gasped. A low, shuddering breath escaped his lips as his dark eyes locked onto my mouth.

He didn't read my lips. He didn't look at my phone.

He heard me.

"You..." Vincent rasped out. His voice was rough, deep, and uncultivated—the voice of a man who hadn't spoken aloud in ten agonizing years. "You... spoke..."

Tears spilled over my lashes, cutting clean tracks down my cheeks as I collapsed onto my knees beside his stool, taking his broad, calloused hands into my lap.

"Can you hear me, Vincent?" I sobbed softly, pressing his hands against my face. "Can you really hear me?"

Vincent dropped out of his seat, falling onto his knees flat on the floorboards before me. He reached out, his broad hands framing my face, his thumbs stroking my cheekbones as a heavy, silent tear spilled from his dark eyes.

"I hear you, Nora," Vincent whispered, his raspy baritone trembling with a profound, weightless emotion that made my soul ache. "Your voice... it's the first thing I've heard in ten years."

He pulled me against his broad chest, wrapping his strong arms around my waist, holding me flush against his beating heart as if I were the only anchor holding him to the living world.

I buried my face in the curve of his neck, smelling the scent of cedarwood, rain, and raw power, feeling the steady, rapid thrumming of his pulse beneath my palms.

The man my father had sold me to for fifty dollars—the man everyone said was an untouchable, heartless monster—was holding me in the dark, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated rebirth.

And as I wrapped my arms tightly around his neck, I knew that I would do whatever it took to help him reclaim his kingdom.
