Chapter 1 - The Arrival of the KingHe thought he left a helpless house-wife in a worn dress at home, but he was about to meet the sole heiress to the empire that owned his entire life.

The wind howling over Euclid Avenue was sharp, carrying the scent of coming rain, but inside the top-floor grand ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton, the air was warm, smelling of vintage champagne and white lilies.
Spencer Conway adjusted the cuffs of his bespoke Italian tuxedo, holding a crystal glass of scotch. On his arm, Paisley Daley preened like a peacock, her champagne-colored gown trailing across the polished marble floor as she soaked in the envious gazes of Cleveland’s high society.
"Spencer, darling," Paisley purred, leaning close to his ear, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Look at how everyone is staring at us. We look like the power couple of the decade. Aren't you glad you didn't bring that pathetic little mouse in her faded navy dress?"
Spencer took a slow sip of his drink, a faint, arrogant smirk playing on his lips. "Phoebe doesn't belong in rooms like this, Paisley. She's sweet, but she lacks vision. She’s content living a small, quiet life. Apex Group needs glamour, status, and power tonight."
"And I give you all three," Paisley giggled, tapping her diamond-encrusted fingers against his lapel.
Suddenly, the ambient chatter of five hundred elite guests, politicians, and corporate titans fell into a sudden, eerie hush.
The heavy oak double doors of the grand ballroom swung open with a dramatic, echoing thud.
A squad of eight private security guards in sharp black suits stepped inside first, forming an impenetrable double line. Following them was an elderly man whose presence was so overwhelming, so ancient and formidable, that even the mayor of the city lowered his champagne glass in instinctual respect.
Raymond Harrell.
The legendary founder and majority owner of the Harrell Conglomerate—a multi-billion-dollar global juggernaut that owned sixty percent of the commercial real estate in the state, including the very building Spencer’s company rented for its headquarters.
Spencer’s eyes widened in sheer shock. "My God... that's Raymond Harrell. He hasn't attended a public gala in five years. If I can secure a five-minute conversation with him tonight, Apex Group's valuation will double by tomorrow morning!"
"Oh, Spencer! Introduce me to him!" Paisley squealed softly, clutching his arm tighter. "Let's go say hello!"
Spencer smoothed his jacket, puffing out his chest as he navigated through the parted crowd, stepping directly into Raymond Harrell’s path with a practiced, charming smile.
"Mr. Harrell!" Spencer said loudly, holding out his right hand with grand confidence. "What an absolute honor to have you here tonight. I am Spencer Conway, CEO of Apex Group—"
Raymond Harrell stopped in his tracks.
His piercing gray eyes, cold as glacial ice, slowly drifted down to Spencer's outstretched hand, then moved up to Spencer's face. He didn't take the hand. He didn't even smile.
Instead, Raymond raised his hand, gesturing to his head of security. "Clear the room."
"What?" Spencer blinked, his smile wavering. "Mr. Harrell?"
Before Raymond could speak, a sleek, matte-black Rolls-Royce Phantom pulled up to the private VIP entrance directly behind the glass atrium of the ballroom.
The door was opened by a butler in white gloves.
Stepping out into the glittering lights of the atrium was a woman.
She wore a custom-tailored, midnight-blue velvet gown lined with real silver thread, cascading down her slender frame like liquid starlight. Around her throat rested the famous 'Star of Ohio'—a fifty-carat sapphire necklace worth more than Spencer’s entire corporate enterprise. Her hair was swept up in an elegant, regal crown, and her eyes burned with an icy, calm power that took everyone's breath away.
Paisley gasped, her mouth falling open. "Who... who is that woman?!"
Spencer stared at the woman walking toward them on Raymond Harrell’s arm, his glass slipping from his fingers and shattering against the marble floor.

It was Phoebe.
His wife.
