Chapter 5 - The Stolen Algorithm“Explain that right now,” Victoria hissed, stepping closer to Maya, her professional veneer cracking to reveal a desperate, predatory edge. “Dr. Finch’s cryptographic architecture is strictly classified under federal NDA and corporate patent law. How does a high school student have his proprietary network diagrams in her school bag?”

Daniel stepped between them, his towering frame shielding Maya. His eyes burned with ice-cold fury.

“Back off, Victoria,” Daniel commanded, his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous register. “You do not interrogate my guests in my hotel lobby. If Maya has Dr. Finch's notes, it’s because she earned them.”

“Daniel, you fool!” Victoria whispered fiercely, lowering her voice so the nearby hotel staff couldn't overhear. “Don't you see what’s happening? This girl isn't a random passenger who magically appeared on your flight. She’s a plant! Sterling Dynamics has been trying to crack our quantum encryption architecture for six months. They sent her to get close to you, to infiltrate your inner circle, to steal the core algorithmic blueprint!”

Maya let out a quiet, incredulous sigh. She looked at Victoria with profound pity. “If Sterling Dynamics wanted to steal Dr. Finch’s architecture, they wouldn't send a high school student flying coach on a red-eye flight carrying a backpack with a broken zipper. They’d hire competent spies who don't spend their spare time calculating fluid dynamics on airplane napkins.”

Several hotel attendants standing nearby let out muffled coughs to hide their laughter.

Victoria’s face flushed a furious, mottled crimson. “You insolent little brat—!”

“Enough, Victoria!” Daniel bellowed, his voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers and bringing the entire lobby to an absolute standstill. Security guards snapped to attention. “One more word of disrespect toward Maya, and I will personally strip you of your partnership, void your stock options, and have you escorted off these premises before you can blink.”

Victoria trembled with rage and humiliation. She knew Daniel meant every single word. She smoothed down the lapels of her emerald pantsuit, forcing a tight, venomous smile.

“Very well, Daniel,” Victoria murmured icily. “Protect your little pet project. But when the board reviews the acquisition files this afternoon and discovers that classified research has been compromised, don't say I didn't warn you.”

With a sharp pivot on her stiletto heels, Victoria turned and marched briskly out toward the waiting limousine, her briefcase swinging violently at her side.

Daniel exhaled slowly, turning to Maya with genuine contrition in his eyes. “I am so sorry about that, Maya. Victoria is... well, she’s exceptionally ambitious, and currently losing her grip on reality.”

Maya offered a reassuring smile, entirely unfazed. “It’s okay, Mr. Whitmore. People who steal always assume everyone else is stealing too. It’s a psychological projection.”

Daniel laughed—a genuine, booming laugh that felt good to release. He signaled his head of private security, a massive, quiet man named Marcus.

“Marcus, escort Miss Lin to her accommodations at St. Jude’s College in Cambridge immediately. Ensure her room upgrade is handled, and station two guards discreetly at the lodge entrance. Nobody touches her bag, and nobody disturbs her research.”

“Yes, Mr. Whitmore,” Marcus replied respectfully.

Maya looked at Daniel, her eyes softening. She reached into her hoodie pocket and pulled out a small, foil-wrapped homemade oatmeal cookie, handing it to him. “Eat this with your coffee, Mr. Whitmore. You still look like you haven't slept in a week.”

Daniel took the cookie, feeling a lump form in his throat. “Thank you, Maya. I'll see you soon. Keep that black card close.”

As Maya walked out to the waiting car, Daniel had no idea that Victoria Vance wasn't just bluffing—she had already initiated a devastating corporate trap that would target Maya's academic integrity, her research grant, and her future, all in an attempt to destroy Daniel and seize control of Whitmore Technologies.
