Chapter 4 - The Return of the Outcast

Forty-eight hours later, a private Gulfstream jet touched down on the tarmac at Teterboro Airport just outside New York City.

I didn't look like the woman who had been left stranded in a Bangkok hotel room in a simple dress and bare feet. I stepped down the metal stairs wearing a tailored, midnight-blue Chanel pantsuit, dark sunglasses shielding my eyes, and a slate-gray cashmere coat draped over my shoulders. Waiting at the base of the stairs was a convoy of three black town cars and a security detail led by Director Vance—no relation to Ethan, thankfully, but a legend in corporate security circles.

“Welcome back, Ms. Bennett,” Director Vance greeted, opening the door of the lead vehicle.

“Thank you, Director,” I replied smoothly, sliding into the leather interior. “Has Ethan returned to the city?”

“He landed at JFK twelve hours ago,” Vance answered, starting the engine. “He and his mother went straight to their Park Avenue penthouse. They’ve been frantically calling every attorney and bank executive in Manhattan trying to unlock their accounts, but our federal freeze has locked down every single channel. They are completely cut off.”

“Good,” I murmured, looking out the tinted window as the Manhattan skyline came into view. “And the emergency board meeting for Vance Industries?”

“Scheduled for 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning,” Vance confirmed with a faint smile. “Your legal team has already served every member of the board with the forensic audit proving Ethan and Evelyn’s embezzlement scheme. Half the directors are already demanding Ethan’s immediate resignation.”

The car sped through the Holland Tunnel and into the heart of Manhattan. For the next twenty-four hours, I didn't rest. I stayed locked in a secure penthouse office overlooking Central Park, reviewing financial ledgers, signing legal injunctions, and coordinating with federal investigators. Every piece of the trap was falling into place with mathematical precision.

By 9:45 the next morning, I stood outside the massive mahogany double doors of the executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Vance Industries tower.

My heart beat with a steady, rhythmic thud. The ghosts of the past—the lonely orphan girl Evelyn loved to belittle, the submissive wife who had played her part to perfection—were completely burned away.

Arthur walked up beside me, holding a thick leather briefcase. “Ready, Ms. Bennett?”

May you like

I adjusted my cuffs, a cold, brilliant smile touching my lips.

“Let’s go see my husband.”
