Chapter 5 - The Reckoning“No,” Joanna said, planting both hands firmly against the doorframe, her body acting as an impenetrable barrier between the past and the present. “You don't get to walk away for seven months, wallow in your self-pity, and then waltz back in here demanding to play father just because a multi-million-dollar inheritance put our son on your radar.”

“Joanna, please,” Logan begged, his knees trembling slightly as he took a desperate half-step forward. “Just five minutes. I don't want the money. I’ll sign away every single legal right to the Wright estate, I swear it. You can keep sole custody, you can erase my name from the birth certificate, you can never talk to me again after today… just let me look at him. Please.”

The raw, unvarnished agony in his voice pierced through the armor of her anger. For a fraction of a second, Joanna saw the young man she had fallen in love with two years ago—broken, desperate, and utterly lost.

She turned her head slowly, looking back into the dim apartment where little Leo’s cries had quieted down into soft, rhythmic coos.

Taking a deep, shuddering breath, Joanna stepped aside, leaving a narrow opening in the doorway.

“Ten minutes, Logan,” she said coldly, her voice devoid of all warmth. “And then you walk out of here and never look back.”

Logan nodded mutely, swallowing hard as he slipped past her into the cramped apartment. He moved as if he were walking on broken glass, his boots clicking softly against the linoleum floor.

He stopped beside the laundry basket resting on the low wooden table.

For a long moment, Logan didn't move. He simply stared down into the makeshift bassinet, his chest rising and falling in ragged, uneven surges. Then, slowly, as if afraid the vision would evaporate if he touched it, he knelt down on one knee.

Leo was awake, blinking his dark, expressive eyes—eyes that mirrored Logan’s own—while tiny fingers curled into loose fists near his chin.

“Hi…” Logan whispered, his voice cracking so violently the word barely registered as sound. He reached out a hesitant, calloused index finger, letting the infant’s tiny hand wrap instinctively around his knuckle.

A single tear slipped from Logan’s eye, landing softly on the edge of the flannel blanket.

“I’m so sorry,” Logan wept quietly, his forehead pressing against the rim of the basket. “I’m so sorry, little man. I was a coward. I was so damn scared… but I swear to God, I’m never going to let you down again.”

Joanna stood by the kitchen counter, watching them with her arms tightly crossed. The sight should have brought her satisfaction—seeing the man who broke her heart now broken himself, kneeling in the dust of her poverty.

Instead, it just felt hollow. Pain didn't cancel out pain; it only multiplied it.

Before either of them could speak another word, a sharp, jarring sound shattered the heavy quiet of the apartment.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Heavy, violent pounding echoed against the exterior hallway door, followed by the sound of heavy boots and muffled, authoritative voices.

“Open up! Boston Police Department! We have a warrant for search and seizure!”

Logan shot to his feet, his face draining of all color in an instant.

“Who… who is that?” Logan stammered, looking at Joanna in sheer panic.

Before Joanna could answer, the flimsy wooden door splintered inward with a deafening crash as the deadbolt sheared straight out of the rotting frame. Three men in sharp black suits, flanked by two uniformed officers, marched uninvited into the living room.

Leading them was a tall, silver-haired attorney holding a thick leather briefcase—Victor Vance, senior legal counsel for the Wright Medical Foundation.

Vance cast a cold, clinical eye around the shabby apartment before his gaze landed squarely on Logan, and then down at the bassinet containing the newborn infant.

A thin, triumphant smile curled across the lawyer's lips.

“Well, well, well,” Vance purred, his voice dripping with condescending satisfaction. “It appears our private investigators were correct. Mr. Logan Wright… and the elusive heir to the Wright dynasty. I’m afraid you’re both coming with us.”
