Chapter 2 - The Mother’s VowI stood up slowly, keeping Grace shielded behind my body, glaring across the threshold at the woman who had birthed me. The sheer, chilling composure in Eleanor Vance’s eyes made my stomach churn. This wasn't a mistake or a moment of madness; this was an execution of will, calculated down to the last brick of this hidden cell.

“You locked her down here,” I said, my voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. “My wife. Nine months pregnant. In a concrete hole.”
Eleanor stepped two paces into the room, her high heels clicking sharply against the stone floor. She cast a look of profound disgust toward the corner where Grace lay huddled against the wall.
“I saved this family from ruin, Julian,” Eleanor replied, her tone dripping with righteous condescension. “When you married her—a commoner with no bloodline, no pedigree, and no understanding of what it means to carry the Vance name—I tolerated it. But when you sailed off to handle your father’s legacy and left her here vulnerable, I saw the truth. She was dragging you down. A domestic anchor holding back a titan. She didn't belong in our world. So, I offered her a choice: sign the relinquishment papers, walk away with a severance check, and leave the child to be raised properly by the family. And when she refused... she made her own arrangements necessary.”
Grace let out a small, terrified gasp behind me, clutching her stomach. “She... she drugged my tea the night you left, Julian. I woke up down here in the dark. She took my phone. She threatened that if I ever screamed, she would ensure our baby was taken the second it was born and thrown to the wolves.”
“Lies of a desperate girl,” Eleanor snapped, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. “Julian, step away from her. The delivery team is already on their way up the private service elevator. Dr. Sterling is upstairs waiting in the medical suite. Once the child is delivered safely into my custody, this unfortunate creature will be transferred to a private sanituary upstate where she can live out her days in quiet seclusion. You will divorce her quietly on grounds of abandonment. The scandal will be managed.”
The audacity of her words hung in the damp air like poison gas. She genuinely believed she owned us. She believed her wealth, her name, and her power gave her dominion over life, death, and human souls.
“You think you’re going to take my child?” I asked, taking a slow, deliberate step forward toward her.
Eleanor raised an eyebrow. “Don’t be melodramatic, Julian. You are a Vance. You need an heir, yes—but an heir unblemished by her common blood. I am securing your future.”
Before she could finish her sentence, I lunged forward, closing the distance between us with terrifying speed. Eleanor’s composure cracked for a microsecond as my hand shot out and clamped around the heavy brass door handle behind her. With a violent heave, I slammed the thick steel door shut and spun the heavy deadlock from the inside, clicking the industrial bolts firmly into place.
Muffled thuds and Eleanor’s outraged voice echoed against the metal from the hallway. “Julian! Open this door this instant! You are destroying everything!”
I ignored her, turning back to Grace, who was breathing in short, shallow gasps. Her face had gone chalk white, and a sudden dampness stained the hem of her hospital gown.
“Julian...” Grace whimpered, her hands gripping my forearm with terrifying strength. “The... the contractions... they’re starting. I think... I think the stress... the baby’s coming right now.”

Panic, cold and sharp, flooded my veins. We were trapped in a subterranean dungeon beneath a hostile estate, cut off from the main house, with my mother and her loyal security detail roaming the halls above.
“Hold on to me, baby,” I whispered, lifting her effortlessly into my arms. “We’re getting out of here. Right now.”
