Chapter 2 - The Audit of a LiarThree days later, the dust hadn't just settled; it had calcified into a warzone.

I was sitting in my temporary executive suite at a high-end extended-stay hotel, nursing a black coffee and reviewing my own firm's quarterly reports, when the intercom buzzed. It was the concierge.
"Ms. Hayes? There is a woman here to see you. She says it’s urgent. A Ms. Chloe Vance."
I raised an eyebrow. Chloe. Here? The audacity was almost impressive.
"Send her up," I said.
I left the door unlocked and went back to my laptop. A minute later, the door swung open. Chloe marched in, looking significantly less glamorous than she had at the gala. Her designer trench coat was wrinkled, her blonde hair pulled into a messy knot, and the smug confidence that had radiated from her three nights ago was completely gone.
"You need to stop this," she demanded, slamming a manicured hand onto my glass desk.
I didn't look up from my screen. "Stop what, exactly?"
"The investigation! Ryan’s lawyers are saying I could be indicted for wire fraud! I didn't do anything! He set up those accounts, he just put my name on the LLC documents!"
I finally closed my laptop and gave her my full attention. She was shaking.
"Chloe, let me explain how forensic accounting works," I said, gesturing for her to sit. She refused, crossing her arms defensively. "When money moves, it leaves a footprint. You claim Ryan set up the accounts. But my initial sweep showed that the IP address used to authorize the transfers to Aura Consulting originated from your apartment."
She opened her mouth, then snapped it shut, her eyes widening.
"Furthermore," I continued, "the funds from that shell company were used to pay off your student loans, fund a vacation to Cabo that you two took in February under the guise of a 'conference,' and purchase your vehicle. Ignorance is not a legal defense when you are actively spending the stolen capital."
"I didn't know it was stolen!" she shrieked, tears of sheer panic welling in her eyes. "He said it was his bonus structure! He told me his marriage was dead, that you were cold and controlling, and that we were going to start a new life together!"
"And you believed him." I shook my head, feeling a microscopic ounce of pity for her naivety, quickly overshadowed by disgust. "He lied to the woman he stood at an altar with for six years. What made you think he wouldn't lie to the woman he was sleeping with in cheap hotel rooms?"
"I'll testify against him," she blurted out. "If I go to the board... if I tell them it was all his idea, will you call off the dogs?"
I stood up, smoothing the skirt of my pencil suit.
"I don't control the board, Chloe. And I certainly don't control the federal investigators who are likely going to subpoena your bank records by Friday. If you want a deal, I suggest you stop talking to me and go hire the most aggressive defense attorney you can afford."
I walked to the door and opened it. "Now, get out of my room."
She practically fled down the hallway.
As soon as the door clicked shut, my cell phone rang. The caller ID displayed a number I didn't recognize, but the area code was local.
"Madison Hayes," I answered.
"Ms. Hayes. My name is Julian Vance. I'm the lead investigator hired by your husband's board of directors." The voice was deep, resonant, and strictly professional. "I've just finished reviewing the preliminary dossier you sent over."
"And your thoughts, Mr. Vance?"
"My thoughts are that you are either the most brilliant forensic accountant I've ever seen, or the most dangerous ex-wife in history," he said, and I could hear a faint trace of amusement in his voice. "We found more. Much more than just the shell company. Ryan wasn't just skimming from the top. He was actively defrauding the primary investors. I need to meet with you."
"I'm listening."
May you like
"Lunch. An hour. The Capital Grille. I need you to walk me through the encrypted ledgers, because Ryan is trying to burn the servers."
I smiled. The game was escalating. "I'll be there, Mr. Vance."
