Chapter 4 - Terms of SurrenderI stared down at Lorenzo DeSantis kneeling in the mud and rain on my wooden porch.

The man who had made billionaire investors weep, the man who controlled half the shipping ports on the East Coast, was kneeling at my feet like a beggar asking for bread.
"Get up, Lorenzo," I said quietly. "You look pathetic."
Lorenzo stood up slowly, wiping his face with his sleeve, his gray eyes locked onto mine with raw, desperate hope. "Will you let me inside? Just to talk. Ten minutes. If you tell me to leave after ten minutes, I will walk down that driveway and never bother you again."
I looked at his wet clothes, then at the empty pine woods behind him. I unhooked the safety chain and opened the heavy door.
"Ten minutes," I said, stepping back into the warm living room, keeping the kitchen counter between us. "And keep your hands where I can see them."
Lorenzo stepped into the small cottage, closing the door softly behind him. He looked around the simple room—the stone fireplace, the modest wool rug, the stacks of library books on the small dining table.
"It’s small," he murmured softly. "But it’s warm."
"It’s honest," I replied coldly. "Something you know nothing about."
Lorenzo winced as if I had slapped him across the face. He walked over to the stone hearth, warming his cold hands over the fire, keeping his back turned to me for a moment.
"Vanessa Hale was fired the night you left," Lorenzo said softly, his voice echoing off the exposed rafters. "She tried to blackmail me with corporate documents. I had her arrested for corporate espionage. She will spend the next three years in federal prison."
"I don't care about Vanessa, Lorenzo," I repeated, leaning against the counter, resting my hand over my baby bump. "She was just a symptom of what you are. You used me to clean your image. You treated our marriage like a business acquisition."
Lorenzo turned around, looking straight into my eyes.
"At first... yes," he admitted, his voice rough and painfully honest. "When my father arranged our introduction two years ago, I thought you were just a quiet girl from a respectable family who would make my corporate portfolio look clean to the banks. I thought love was a weakness that weak men invented."
He took three slow, deliberate steps toward me, stopping four feet away, respecting the space I had demanded.
"But then you stayed up with me when I had pneumonia," he continued, his gray eyes shining with intense emotion. "You bandaged my hands without asking questions. You brought life into that cold, empty estate. I fell in love with you, Isabella. But I was too terrified of my own enemies—and my own darkness—to ever admit it to you or to myself."
"So you lied to me," I said, tears burning my throat. "You kissed her in your office on our anniversary while I was carrying tiny baby shoes in my bag!"
"It was the biggest mistake of my life!" Lorenzo cried out, taking a step closer, dropping to his knees again right in front of the counter, looking up at me. "I didn't kiss her because I wanted her! I kissed her because I was an arrogant bastard who wanted to feel powerful! And I would cut off my own hand if it could undo that thirty seconds!"
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a thick leather folder, placing it on the counter between us.
"What is this?" I asked, frowning.
"It is the complete transfer of my personal legal wealth," Lorenzo explained quietly. "Seventy percent of the DeSantis corporate holdings, the shipping firms, the real estate in Manhattan, and the estate in Westchester. Everything has been legally placed into an irrevocable trust under your name and our child's name."
I stared at the thick legal documents in shock. "What?"
"If you want the divorce, Isabella, you can have it tomorrow," Lorenzo said, his voice completely steady, devoid of any deception. "You will own the majority of my empire. I will have no financial leverage over you. You will be richer than ninety percent of the men on Wall Street. You can live anywhere in the world, and I will pay for two dozen private guards to keep you safe from my enemies."
He reached out, his trembling fingers gently touching the hem of my knit sweater, looking up at me with absolute submission.
"I am giving you total power over me, Isabella," Lorenzo whispered. "You can destroy me with a single signature. I only ask for one thing in return."
"What?" I choked out, my heart pounding violently against my ribs.
"Let me be a father to our child," he begged, tears streaming down his face. "Don't let our baby grow up thinking their father was just a monster who didn't care. Let me earn my way back into your life, even if it takes twenty years."
I looked down at the dark king of New York kneeling before me, offering me his fortune, his power, and his heart on a silver platter.
The silence in the small cottage was absolute, broken only by the crackle of the fireplace and the sound of our breathing.
"The ten minutes are up, Lorenzo," I said softly.
Lorenzo’s face fell, a look of profound sorrow washing over his features. He stood up slowly, bowing his head, and turned toward the door.
"Lorenzo," I called out just as his hand reached the brass doorknob.
He froze, turning his head back to look at me. "Yes?"
"There is an extra bedroom down the hall," I said, turning my back to him to pick up my teacup. "The sheets are clean. You can stay tonight. But if you try to touch me, I will throw you into the ocean."
May you like
A tiny, breathless gasp escaped Lorenzo’s lips. A flicker of real, genuine hope lit up his sharp gray eyes for the first time in four months.
"Thank you, Isabella," he whispered softly. "I will sleep on the floor."
