Chapter 3 - The Sister’s EntitlementThe next forty-eight hours in the hospital were a blur of physical therapy, legal filings, and structural reorganization.

With the financial pipeline cut, my family didn't reflect or apologize—they escalated.

By Wednesday afternoon, my younger sister, Claire, arrived at the hospital like a tornado. She didn't bother checking in at the nurse’s station; she burst into my room wearing a designer trench coat, her phone held out in front of her face as if she were filming a livestream.

"Where is she?!" Claire yelled, stepping into the room. "Mara! What the hell did you do to my business bank account?!"

Sitting in the armchair beside my bed was Elena, the night nurse who had helped me the evening of the crash, along with a gentle, elderly woman named Martha—a certified pediatric nanny whom Daniel Cho had hired using my personal estate funds to care for Noah and Lily right inside my suite.

Martha immediately picked up Lily, holding her close, while Elena stepped between Claire and my bed.

"Ma'am, you need to step outside," Elena commanded firmly.

"Get out of my way!" Claire shrieked, waving her phone wildly. "My sister is abusing her financial power because she had a little car accident! She froze my company’s payroll! My employees are quitting! My vendor cards are bounced!"

I looked at Claire. She was twenty-six years old, had never held a real job in her life, and had spent four years living in a downtown luxury loft paid for entirely by my holding company under the guise of "brand expansion."

"Turn off the camera, Claire," I said flatly from my bed.

"No! I'm live on Instagram right now showing everyone what kind of monster you are!" Claire screamed, pointing the camera at my hospital bed, my IV lines, and the twins' cribs. "Look at her! Sitting in a VIP suite while her family suffers! My sister refused to fund my women's empowerment boutique because she's jealous of my success!"

Daniel Cho stepped out from the adjacent bathroom, holding his tablet. He walked directly up to Claire, grabbed her phone by the frame, and pushed the screen down.

"Miss Vance," Daniel said, his voice smooth as silk and cold as steel. "You are currently recording inside a private medical facility without consent, which is a direct violation of state privacy laws. Furthermore, if you post one second of video containing those two minors or Mrs. Vance's medical status, I will file an immediate emergency injunction for defamation and harassment before the sun sets."

Claire blinked, pulling her phone back. "Who are you? Her legal bodyguard?"

"I am her corporate counsel," Daniel replied. "And as of 9:00 a.m. today, I have filed a judicial audit of Claire's Style Loft LLC. Since your boutique was funded as a subsidiary under Mara's holding company, you are legally obligated to return forty-two thousand dollars in unaccounted inventory expenditures from last quarter."

Claire’s jaw dropped open. "What?! That was for my trip to Paris for 'fashion research'!"

"It was a luxury vacation with your boyfriend," I corrected coldly from the bed. "And it was paid for with money I earned working eighty hours a week while grieving my late husband."

"You... you gave me that money!" Claire cried, her voice turning into a high-pitched whine. "You told me you wanted to support my dreams!"

"I supported a sister who I thought loved me," I said, my chest aching as I looked at her. "I didn't realize I was funding a parasite. Get out of my room, Claire. The next time you talk to me, it will be through Daniel."

"You're a monster, Mara!" Claire screamed as Elena guided her toward the door. "Mom and Dad are right! You've always been cold and heartless! You think just because you have money you own us?!"

"No, Claire," I said as the heavy oak door began to shut. "I don't own you anymore. You're completely on your own."
