Chapter 3 - The Fortress in PinehavenThe armored SUV glided silently through the massive iron gates of the Mercer Estate twenty minutes outside Jackson at 1:15 AM.

The estate was a sprawling, stone-and-timber fortress perched high on a private cliff overlooking the Snake River, surrounded by soaring pine trees, high security walls, and armed guards patrolling the snow-covered grounds.

Inside the grand stone foyer, a massive fireplace crackled with warm, roaring oak logs, illuminating the soaring wood-beamed ceilings and priceless western art.

An older, elegant housekeeper named Mrs. Gable hurried down the hallway, carrying a silver tray with warm tea and soft towels.

"Mr. Mercer!" Mrs. Gable spoke warmly, her eyes widening in surprise as she took in my sapphire dress and the heavy overcoat wrapped around my shoulders. "We received your message from the car. The master suite in the east wing has been prepared."

"Thank you, Martha," Nathaniel replied, taking off his suit jacket and handing it to a guard. "Have Dr. Vance examine Miss Vance's wrists. She cut her palms on her own jewelry during the gala."

I looked down at my hands in surprise. I hadn't even realized that my fingernails had drawn small beads of dried blood across my skin during Daniel's proposal speech.

Nathaniel guided me into a warm, sunlit sitting room overlooking the river, gently setting me down into a plush leather armchair near the fire.

He dropped onto one knee beside my chair—a massive, feared crime boss kneeling on the rug before a twenty-four-year-old payroll clerk—his long fingers gently opening my bruised palms, taking a soft warm towel from the tray to clean the dried blood from my skin.

His touch was unexpectedly, agonizingly gentle, contradicting every terrifying story I had ever heard about him.

"You don't have to do this, Mr. Mercer," I whispered softly, watching his broad hands move over mine.

Nathaniel raised his gray eyes, looking directly into mine.

"My name is Nathaniel, Clara," he corrected quietly. "And I don't do anything I don't choose to do."

"Why are you protecting me like this?" I asked, my voice trembling. "If Daniel's fraud is exposed, it destroys Blackridge. Why involve yourself in my humiliation?"

Nathaniel leaned closer, his thumb gently stroking the soft skin near my wrist.

"Because six weeks ago, Clara," Nathaniel confessed, his baritone dropping into a low, velvet rhythm that made my heart leap against my ribs, "I stood near the balcony of the Grand Timber Lodge and watched you work on your laptop until three in the morning, fixing payroll entries for injured timber workers who had been denied their insurance checks."

May you like

I blinked, my mind racing.

"You saw a room full of arrogant, corrupt people tonight who treated you like trash because you didn't carry an elite family name," Nathaniel murmured, his voice thick with an absolute, fierce devotion. "I saw a woman of immense integrity, courage, and brilliant intelligence who refused to let poor men starve. In my world, Clara... that makes you a queen."
