Chapter 7 - Epilogue — The Crown of ChicagoOne year to the day after the night at the Bellweather Grand, I stood on the private wrap-around terrace of my penthouse suite overlooking Lake Michigan.

The autumn wind was crisp, carrying the scent of fallen leaves and the distant hum of traffic from the Outer Drive.
I wore a simple black cashmere sweater, my hair falling freely over my shoulders, my hands wrapped around a mug of hot spiced tea.
My father stepped out onto the terrace beside me, wearing a warm wool overcoat, resting his hands on the stone railing.
“You’ve been very quiet tonight, Elena,” he observed softly, looking sideways at me.
“I was just thinking about last year,” I admitted, smiling faintly. “About the clearance blouse. About the wine.”
My father let out a rich, deep laugh that blended into the night air. “Ah yes. The expensive wine. I still have the surveillance footage of Preston’s face when he realized who I was. I watch it whenever I need a good laugh.”
“You kept the footage?” I teased.
“Of course,” he grinned. “Family history is important.”
He turned, placing his hand gently on my shoulder. “You know, Elena, when I built Carter Holdings, people thought I was just a brute with money and muscle. They thought our family’s power would die with my generation.”
He looked out over the glowing grid of the Chicago skyline, where dozens of skyscrapers bore our financial footprints.
“They were wrong,” he continued quietly. “You took a single drop of disrespect and turned it into an entire empire. You didn't just inherit the throne, Elena. You built a fortress around it.”
I leaned my head against his shoulder, feeling a deep, profound sense of peace settle over my chest.
The ghosts of the past were gone. The enemies who thought they could mock a woman in a clearance blouse had been swept away like dust in the wind.
My phone buzzed on the glass table nearby. I glanced down at the screen: an incoming notification from the international exchange confirming the successful completion of the European shipping merger. Carter Holdings was officially the most powerful private conglomerate in the hemisphere.
I picked up the phone, silenced the notification, and set it back down.

I didn't need to check the numbers anymore. I didn't need to prove anything to anyone.
The crown of Chicago wasn't something I had to fight for anymore. It was simply mine.
