Chapter 7 - Unbroken and Forever SafeOne year after the day I returned from deployment, the warm autumn sun broke brightly over the mountain ridges of Portland, Maine.

A small, beautiful cottage perched on a quiet cliff overlooking the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean sat bathed in golden afternoon light.
I had retired honorably from military service, moving away from Minnesota to build a peaceful, secure sanctuary for my son near the sea that Emily had loved so much.
On the wide stone terrace overlooking the ocean, fourteen-month-old Liam ran through the green grass wearing a bright yellow sweater, his little boots making soft pattering sounds on the stone path as he chased a golden retriever puppy.
I stood near the wooden balustrade wearing a comfortable wool sweater, holding a warm cup of coffee, looking out over the vast, sparkling blue water stretching before us into the unbroken horizon.
Beside me, mounted on a stone pedestal near the garden, sat a beautiful bronze plaque bearing Emily's picture, engraved with the words: EMILY MILLER — FOREVER UNBROKEN, FOREVER LOVED.
Liam ran up the stone steps, his dark eyes shining like bright stars under the autumn sun, sliding happily onto my lap, wrapping his small arms around my neck.
"Daddy!" Liam giggled, holding up a smooth white sea shell he had found on the path. "Look! Water stone!"
I pulled my son tight against my chest, pressing a warm, sweet kiss into his soft hair, feeling a deep, weightless peace settle into every corner of my soul.
There were no arrogant mothers lying in dark parlors. There were no brothers reaching for guns behind their backs. There were no secrets left in the shadows.

The painful past was buried forever. The unbroken father had built his kingdom.
And standing under the vast, unbroken sky, holding my radiant son against my heart, I knew that our dark nights were over—our lives, our peace, and our future were finally, beautifully, and forever home.
