Chapter 5 - TRIALS OF THE HEARTSix months later.

The news of the corporate scandal had finally settled. My brother Julian and uncle Richard were serving four-year prison sentences for financial fraud, and Cole Global Properties had been completely restructured into an ethical, community-focused development enterprise.
I appointed a brilliant, trustworthy CEO to manage the daily corporate operations, allowing me to step down from active management to focus on what truly mattered.
Emily, Lily, and I were living together in the Nashville mansion.
We had completely transformed the cold, museum-like house. The grand dining room, once built for silent business dinners that never happened, was now filled with brightly colored children's toys, small wooden easels, and framed watercolor paintings of yellow suns and blue butterflies.
However, moving from two completely different worlds into one shared life wasn't without its challenges.
High society gossip blogs quickly caught wind of our relationship. Headlines appeared online:
BILLIONAIRE ARTHUR COLE MARRIES HIS HOUSEKEEPER: ROMANCE OR SOCIAL EXPERIMENT?
FROM DUSTING MANSIONS TO RULING THE ESTATE: WHO IS EMILY CARTER?
One evening, I held a small charity gala at our estate to raise funds for low-income single mothers in Tennessee—a cause close to Emily's heart.
Over two hundred elite guests filled our grand ballroom. Emily wore an elegant emerald-green silk dress, looking breathtakingly beautiful, though her hands trembled slightly as she held her glass of sparkling water.
A group of wealthy socialite women stood near the champagne fountain, whispering loudly enough for Emily to hear as she passed by:
"Look at her trying to play the lady of the manor..." one woman sneered softly behind her fan. "She used to scrub the toilets in this place. Arthur is clearly just having a mid-life crisis."
"Give it a year," another woman sniffed. "A man of his status will get bored of a girl with no family legacy."
Emily froze, her face turning pale as she set her glass down on a nearby tray, tears brimming in her eyes. She turned and quickly slipped out through the side doors leading into the rose garden.
I had been standing across the room talking to a mayor's representative, but I saw everything.
My blood boiled with instant, fierce anger.
I walked directly over to the group of snobbish women.
"Ladies," I said, my voice quiet, cold, and echoing with absolute authority.
The women turned, immediately putting on fake, flattering smiles. "Oh, Arthur! What a wonderful party!"
"The exit doors are behind you," I said, pointing toward the main entrance. "Leave my house immediately."
The main woman gasped, horrified. "Arthur! We are major donors to your foundation!"
"I don't want money from people who lack basic humanity," I stated clearly, ensuring nearby guests heard every word. "The woman you just insulted is the intelligent, compassionate co-founder of this charity. She has more grace and integrity in her little finger than this entire circle possesses. Get out of my home before security escorts you to your limousines."
The socialites flushed with deep embarrassment, grabbing their fur coats and scurrying out of the mansion under the critical glares of the surrounding crowd.
I turned on my heel and walked out into the cool midnight air of the rose garden.
Emily was sitting on a stone bench near the fountain, hugging her arms, weeping quietly in the moonlight.
"Emily," I said softly, stepping onto the gravel path.
"They're right, Arthur," Emily cried softly, looking up at me with heartbreak in her eyes. "Your peers look at me and see a maid. I don't know how to speak to senators or tech executives. I'm going to ruin your reputation."
I sat down beside her on the stone bench, taking her hands into mine, kissing her cold fingers.
"Emily, listen to me," I commanded gently. "Those people aren't my 'peers.' They are empty shells who measure human worth by bank accounts and titles. You didn't ruin my reputation—you saved my soul. You showed me what real strength looks like when you raised Lily alone with dignity."
I pulled a small velvet box from my jacket pocket.
Emily gasped, her breath catching in her throat.
I slid down onto one knee in front of her on the gravel path, opening the box to reveal a magnificent, unheated yellow diamond ring that sparkled like the warm sun under the moonlight.
"Emily Carter," I said, my voice trembling with deep, genuine emotion. "You gave me the greatest gift anyone has ever given me—a home, a family, and a reason to love. Will you make me the happiest man on earth and become my wife?"
Emily wept, a joyous, beautiful laugh escaping her lips as she threw her arms around my neck.
"Yes! Yes, Arthur! A thousand times yes!" she cried.
As I slipped the sun-yellow diamond onto her finger, a tiny voice cheered from the garden doorway behind us.
"YAY! NOODLE SAID WE GET TO KEEP ARTHUR FOREVER!"

We turned to see Lily standing near the French doors in her yellow pajamas, holding her plush rabbit high in the air, jumping up and down with pure, unbridled joy.
I reached out my arm, and Lily ran across the lawn, tumbling into our embrace as the three of us held each other under the stars.
