Chapter 3 - The Boardroom SiegeBy 9:00 a.m. the following morning, the glass skyscraper housing Whitman Marketing in downtown Boston was buzzing with frantic energy.

Rumors had leaked across the financial press: Whitman Marketing Facing Insolvency; Founder Investigated for Embezzlement.

In the executive boardroom on the twentieth floor, eight senior board members and major investors sat around a mahogany table, shouting over each other in sheer panic.

"If the bank freezes our payroll account by noon, fifty employees walk!" one investor yelled.

"Where the hell is Ryan?!" another demanded. "He hasn't answered his phone since yesterday morning!"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom clicked open.

The room fell instant silent.

I walked into the boardroom, flanked by Eleanor Vance and three senior forensic accountants from Harrington Trust. I wore a tailored midnight-blue suit, my hair pinned back in an immaculate twist, carrying an air of absolute, calm authority.

"Good morning, gentlemen," I said smoothly, taking my seat at the head of the long table—the very chair Ryan had occupied for five years.

The board chairman, an elderly man named Richard Vance (no relation to Eleanor), blinked in astonishment. "Claire? What are you doing here? This is an emergency board meeting."

"I know, Richard," I replied, gesturing for Eleanor to distribute a thick stack of legal documents to everyone at the table. "I called it."

Richard opened the folder, his eyes widening as he read the cover page. "Harrington Trust... Debt-to-Equity Conversion Clause... sixty-two percent voting control?"

"As of 8:00 a.m. today, Harrington Trust exercised its default rights under the commercial loan agreements," Eleanor announced to the stunned room. "Mrs. Claire Whitman—formerly Harrington—is now the majority owner and interim Chief Executive Officer of this agency."

A murmur of shock rippled through the room.

"Where is Ryan?" an investor asked, leaning forward.

"Ryan Whitman has been formally removed from his position as CEO by executive decree of the majority shareholder," I stated, looking around the room with sharp, unyielding eyes. "He is currently under active investigation for grand larceny and corporate fraud."

Before anyone could process my words, the boardroom doors swung open once again.

Ryan burst into the room, looking unkempt, his suit wrinkled, dark purple shadows beneath his red-rimmed eyes. He held a crumpled piece of paper in his fist.

"This is an illegal takeover!" Ryan screamed, pointing his finger at me as two building security guards rushed into the room behind him. "She’s my wife! She’s using marital assets to sabotage my company!"

I didn't flinch. I didn't even stand up.

"Marital assets, Ryan?" I asked, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet room. "Every dollar Harrington Trust used to purchase your debt came from a pre-marital liquid trust established by my great-grandfather in 1952. You don't own a single cent of it."

"You lied to me!" Ryan roared, taking three aggressive steps toward the table. "You pretended to be poor! You let my parents think you had nothing!"

"I never lied to you, Ryan," I said softly, looking him straight in the eyes. "I simply never corrected your arrogant assumptions. You saw what you wanted to see: a woman you could control, mock, and discard the moment you thought you didn't need her."

Richard Vance stood up from his chair, looking at Ryan with deep disgust. "Security, escort Mr. Whitman out of the building immediately. He no longer has authorization to enter this facility."

The two security guards stepped forward, grabbing Ryan by his arms.

"Claire! Please!" Ryan sobbed, his voice cracking into a high-pitched plea as he was dragged backward out of the boardroom. "Don't do this! Think about our history! Think about our marriage!"

"Our marriage died the second you let your mistress wear my robe in my grandmother's house," I replied coldly, turning my back on him to address the board. "Now, gentlemen... let's discuss how we are going to rebuild this agency."
