Chapter 6 - The Shattered Vault“Adrian,” Vanessa purred, instantly softening her posture, turning toward him with a fragile, helpless expression that made my stomach violently churn. “I was just telling Claire about our history. About how important it is that she understands the full picture before she ties herself to you permanently.”

Adrian didn't even look at her. His dark, storm-gray eyes were locked entirely on my face, reading the absolute devastation written across my features.
“Get out,” Adrian said. His voice wasn't loud. It was a low, terrifying hiss that carried the weight of a death sentence.
Vanessa’s smile faltered. “Adrian, darling, don't be ridiculous. We’re old friends, we’re just—'”
“I said, get out,” Adrian repeated, taking a step toward her that made Vanessa physically recoil in genuine fear. “If you ever speak to my wife—if you ever come within a mile of Claire or my child again—I will strip your family name of every asset, every trust fund, and every corporate share you possess before the sun rises tomorrow morning. Do you understand me?”
The color drained completely from Vanessa’s face. Without another word, she grabbed her fur coat tighter around her shoulders, grabbed the envelope off the table, and practically sprinted back through the glass doors into the ballroom.
The terrace fell into an agonizing, suffocating silence.
The only sound was the distant hum of Manhattan traffic and the ragged sound of my own breathing.
“Claire,” Adrian breathed, taking a cautious step toward me as if approaching a wounded, cornered animal.
“Don't,” I whispered, holding my hand up to stop him. My voice was hollow, devoid of anger, stripped of all fight. Just a cold, dead numbness settling deep into my bones.
“Listen to me,” Adrian pleaded, his face pale, his dark eyes shining with raw, unadulterated panic. “What she told you... it’s a distortion. It’s a lie designed to destroy us.”
“Was it a lie, Adrian?” I asked, looking up at him, my vision swimming with hot tears that I refused to let fall. “Did you or did you not create embryos with Vanessa before we met?”
Adrian flinched. The silence that followed his hesitation was all the confirmation I needed.
“Years ago,” Adrian began, his voice breaking, his hands clenching into tight fists at his sides. “Before I ever met you, before Moretti Capital went public, Vanessa and I were engaged. Her father made me sign a medical custody agreement for our genetic material as part of a joint venture. When her health collapsed, she tried to force me to use them. I refused. I had already fallen in love with you, Claire. I walked away from her, and I legally severed every single tie to those embryos three years ago—the exact week we got married.”
I stared at him, my mind spinning as I tried to separate truth from manipulation.
“And the funding?” I asked, my voice trembling. “She said you were paying for her treatments.”
“I paid her medical bills out of a legal obligation to her late father!” Adrian shouted, the anguish finally breaking through his control. He reached out and grabbed my shoulders, pulling me gently toward him despite my weak resistance. “I never touched her, Claire! I never wanted anyone else from the moment I laid eyes on you in that boardroom! You became my entire world, my home, my family. When I asked for a divorce... God help me, I thought I was setting you free from a life of constant danger and emotional coldness that I didn't know how to fix!”
“You lied to me by omission,” I whispered, tears finally spilling over my lashes, hot against my freezing skin. “You kept secrets in your vault, Adrian. Just like you always do. You thought you could manage everything—Vanessa, the company, our marriage, my pregnancy—like pieces on a chessboard.”
“I’m learning,” Adrian choked out, pulling me tight against his chest, burying his face in my hair, wrapping his strong arms around my body as if he could physically shield me from the cold and the pain. “I’m learning that I can’t control everything. I only want you. I only want our family. Please, Claire... don't shut me out.”
I stood frozen in his arms for a long, agonizing moment. Every instinct screamed at me to push him away, to run back to Brooklyn, to protect my heart from a man whose world was too dangerous, too complicated, too full of ghosts.
And then, a faint, unmistakable flutter brushed against my palm—the tiny, reassuring kick of our baby moving inside me, reminding me that we were already bound together, whether I wanted it or not.
I slowly raised my arms, resting my trembling hands against the lapels of his tuxedo, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the icy armor around my heart finally cracked.
“If you ever keep a secret from me again, Adrian,” I whispered fiercely against his chest, “I will take our child, vanish to the other side of the world, and you will never see either of us again.”
May you like
Adrian gripped me tighter, kissing the top of my head with a fierce, trembling reverence.
“Understood,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “I swear to you, Claire. No more secrets. Ever.”
