Chapter 6 - The Fall of RuggeroThe warmth of the fourth-floor office was a stark contrast to the freezing industrial chill of the harbor outside.

Camila stood up from the desk, walking over to us with a steady step. The dark bruises on her wrists were visible beneath the sleeves of her sweater, but her eyes were clear, bright, and free of the hunted terror I had seen in the country club ballroom.
“I’m sorry I couldn't explain it to you that night, Signora,” Camila said, her voice genuine. “Alessandro told me the plan, but the council had eyes everywhere. If I had looked at you too long, or tried to warn you, Ruggero’s snipers would have put a bullet through my head before the appetizers were served.”
I looked back at Alessandro. The cold, unreadable mask he wore for the rest of the world was completely gone, leaving only the raw, agonizing vulnerability of a man who had carried a war on his shoulders without an ally.
“You should have told me,” I said, my voice thick with emotion. “You didn't have to carry this alone.”
“If you knew, you would have been a target,” Alessandro replied fiercely, stepping closer and gently taking my hand—the bare hand where the ring used to sit. He traced the pale imprint of gold on my finger with his thumb. “I built this empire on blood and fear, Adriana. But the one thing I swore I would never let touch you was the rot at the center of it. Ruggero and the old guard... they’ve been skimming funds and trafficking women under my nose for years, using my name as a shield. I needed a blind spot to take them down. And my supposed failing marriage was the only distraction big enough to make them lower their guard.”
Before I could answer, the heavy steel door at the end of the hallway slammed open with a deafening crash.
Heavy footsteps echoed across the concrete floor, followed by the metallic click of multiple firearms being cocked.
Maso instantly spun around, raising his weapon toward the hallway entrance. Alessandro pulled me behind him, his body forming a protective shield as his hand slid beneath his jacket to grip the handle of his own gun.
Stepping out of the shadows of the hallway, flanked by six armed capos with drawn weapons, was Ruggero Romano.
The elderly strategist didn't look like a frail old man anymore. His face was twisted into a mask of cold, murderous betrayal, his eyes burning with venom as he leveled a silenced pistol directly at Alessandro's chest.
“Well, well, well,” Ruggero sneered, his voice dripping with venom. “A touching family reunion. The adulterer, the runaway wife, and the little rat we forgot to exterminate.”
Alessandro didn't flinch. He stood completely still, his voice dangerously calm. “It ends tonight, Ruggero. Your accounts are frozen. Your smuggling routes are seized. Every man standing behind you received a wire transfer from my legal team an hour ago with a simple choice: walk away, or burn with you.”
Ruggero laughed—a harsh, rattling sound that lacked any warmth. “You think money buys loyalty in our world, boy? I built this syndicate before you learned how to hold a ledger! You let sentimentality blind you. You let a kindergarten teacher and a handful of charity cases destroy what took generations to build!”
He shifted the barrel of his gun slightly, aiming past Alessandro’s shoulder—straight at my heart.
“Let’s see how romantic you feel when I put a bullet through your precious wife's chest,” Ruggero snarled, tightening his finger on the trigger.
Time seemed to slow down.
I saw Alessandro’s muscles tense, preparing to throw himself in front of the bullet. I saw Leah gasp and cover her mouth.
But before Ruggero could squeeze the trigger, a sharp, deafening crack echoed down the hallway.
It wasn't Alessandro's gun.
Ruggero’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute shock. The pistol slipped from his trembling fingers, clattering against the concrete floor. He staggered backward, clutching his right shoulder where a dark, spreading stain of crimson was rapidly soaking through his expensive wool coat.
From the shadows of the secondary stairwell behind Ruggero's men, a tall figure stepped forward, lowering a smoking rifle.
It was one of Ruggero’s own senior capos—a man who had stood beside him for twenty years. He looked down at Ruggero with cold, disgusted indifference.
“The wire transfer cleared, Ruggero,” the capo said flatly. “The old era is over.”
Within seconds, Maso and Alessandro’s remaining loyal guards swarmed the hallway, disarming Ruggero’s shocked men and pinning the bleeding strategist to the floor.

The war was over. The empire was cleansed.
And as the smoke cleared in the cold harbor warehouse, Alessandro slowly turned back to me, his dark eyes shining with a profound, unshakable relief.
