Chapter 5 - The Boardroom StormAt 7:55 AM the following morning, the top floor of the Brooks Development skyscraper on Madison Avenue was surrounded by a wall of high-society tension.

Inside the grand mahogany boardroom, twenty directors sat around the long glass table. At the head of the table sat Margaret Brooks, dressed in a sleek navy suit, looking every bit the ruthless matriarch. She was smiling smoothly, pouring tea for the senior board members, assuring them that her son’s "recent emotional instability" would be handled quietly and professionally.

"Nathan has been under immense pressure with the Hudson Yards project," Margaret announced smoothly to the room. "It is our duty as the board to grant him a temporary leave of absence and transfer voting control to my office until he receives proper medical care."

"Is that so, Margaret?"

My voice echoed through the boardroom speakers as the heavy double doors were pushed wide open.

The entire board turned in unison.

I walked into the room wearing a tailored charcoal suit, my posture imposing, my eyes locked onto my mother. Walking beside me, holding her head high in a stunning emerald-green dress provided by Manhattan's finest tailors, was Caroline. Behind us, Dominic carried four thick black leather binders.

Margaret’s face drained of color. Her tea cup rattled against the saucer. "Nathan... this is an executive board meeting. Guests are not permitted."

"Caroline Miller isn't a guest, Mom," I said, taking my seat at the opposite head of the table while Caroline stood proudly at my right side. "She is the mother of the primary heirs to the Brooks Family Trust."

Murmurs erupted across the boardroom. The directors looked back and forth between me, Caroline, and Margaret.

"Nonsense!" Margaret barked, standing up, her aristocratic composure slipping into frantic rage. "He is hallucinating! This woman is an opportunist who—"

"Silence, Margaret," Arthur Vance, the firm's chief legal counsel, interrupted as he stepped into the room, placing a sealed legal document on the table. "I have here the DNA confirmation reports processed overnight by New York Presbyterian Hospital. The three children currently under private care at the Plaza Hotel are the biological offspring of Nathan Brooks."

Gasps rippled through the room.

"Which means," Arthur continued, "under Section 4 of the late Edward Brooks’s founding charter, fifty percent of the company's voting shares instantly vest into an independent trust managed jointly by Nathan Brooks and Caroline Miller."

"That's a lie!" Margaret shrieked, slamming her hands onto the table. "I am the Vice President! You cannot strip my authority!"

"We aren't just stripping your authority, Margaret," I said coldly, signaling Dominic to open the black binders. "We are presenting the forensic audit of your private accounts."

Dominic slid a binder in front of every board member.

"Over the last five years," I announced into the quiet room, "Margaret Brooks embezzled over fourteen million dollars from our affordable housing development funds to cover her personal gambling debts in Atlantic City and private real estate purchases in the Cayman Islands. She also used corporate funds to hire private security to stalk, harass, and frame Caroline Miller."

The board members opened their binders, their eyes widening in absolute horror as they scanned the bank receipts, wire transfers, and signed affidavits from the security guards Margaret had paid off.

"This is criminal enterprise, Margaret," one senior director said, looking at my mother with utter disgust. "You've been stealing from the company for years!"

"No... Nathan, please!" Margaret sobbed, dropping her arrogant facade, collapsing back into her chair, looking up at me with frantic, desperate eyes. "I did it for us! I did it to keep control!"

"You did it for yourself," Caroline spoke up, her voice ringing clear and steady across the boardroom. "You let three innocent babies sleep on a park bench in freezing weather just to cover up your greed. You aren't a mother, Margaret. You're a monster."

Two uniformed NYPD officers, accompanied by federal fraud investigators, stepped into the boardroom.

"Margaret Brooks," the lead detective said, stepping up to the head of the table. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and filing false police reports."

As the handcuffs clicked around my mother’s wrists, the room fell completely silent. Margaret looked at me as she was led away, her eyes begging for mercy.

I offered none. I simply turned my back on her, turning to face the future she had tried so hard to steal from me.
