Chapter 5 - The Beggar in the RainWhen pride is stripped away, a broken man will crawl through the mud just to touch the hand he used to hold.

6:00 p.m.
A freezing rain had begun to fall over Manhattan, turning the streets into slick dark mirrors reflecting the amber glow of traffic lights.
Outside the Harringford Building, a small crowd of reporters was held back by a line of private security officers.
Ambrose stood in the alleyway behind the building, soaked to the skin. He had lost his coat somewhere between his office and the hotel, his hair was plastered to his forehead, and his shoes were ruined by muddy slush.
When the private garage gates slid open, a sleek white Maybach pulled slowly out onto the street.
Ambrose didn't hesitate. He broke into a run, throwing himself in front of the car.
"STOP!" he screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria. "JACQUELINE! PLEASE! STOP THE CAR!"
The driver slammed on the brakes, stopping just inches from his knees.
Security guards rushed forward to tackle him, but a soft chime sounded as the rear tinted window rolled down three inches.
"Let him speak, Marcus," Jacqueline’s calm voice came from inside the warm, dry interior of the luxury car.
The guards backed away, keeping a close watch as Ambrose stumbled toward the window, gripping the wet door frame with both hands.
"Jacqueline..." Ambrose sobbed, rain pouring down his face, mixing with bitter, hot tears. "Please... I’m begging you... don't do this."
Jacqueline looked at him through the narrow opening. She was wearing a soft cashmere sweater, holding a warm porcelain cup of tea in her lap. She looked serene, beautiful, and completely out of his reach.
"Look at me, Jacqueline!" Ambrose wept, pressing his forehead against the cold glass. "I lost everything today! My company... my reputation... my money! They took my phone, my office... everything!"
"You didn't lose those things today, Ambrose," Jacqueline said gently, her voice devoid of anger. "You traded them away piece by piece every time you lied to me."
"I was stupid! I was arrogant!" Ambrose pleaded, his fingers leaving wet smudges on the window. "I thought I wanted power... I thought I wanted status! But standing in that empty penthouse tonight, looking at your ring in my glass... I realized none of it matters without you! I love you, Jacqueline! I swear to God, I love you!"
Jacqueline looked at him for a long, quiet moment.
"You don't love me, Ambrose," she whispered softly. "You love the way I made you feel about yourself. You loved the legitimacy my name gave you. You loved having a faithful wife waiting at home to heal your bruised ego after a hard day."
"I love our baby!" Ambrose cried out, looking down at her bump through the glass. "Please... don't raise our child without a father!"
Jacqueline placed her hand over her stomach, a soft, protective smile touching her lips.
"My child will have a father, Ambrose," she said firmly. "You will be allowed to be a father in court-approved visitation schedules. But my child will never grow up in a house built on lies, disrespect, and conditional love. They will learn what true strength looks like."
"Jacqueline... please..." Ambrose gasped, falling to his knees in the cold rain as the car began to move forward slowly.

"Goodbye, Ambrose," Jacqueline said softly.
The window rolled up completely, sealing away the cold, the rain, and the weeping man on the pavement behind her.
