Chapter 2 - The Fall of the House of VanceWithin forty-five minutes, the hospital room had transformed into a staging ground for a criminal investigation.

Two detectives from the city’s Major Case Division—Detective Miller, a sharp-eyed woman with a notebook, and Detective Vance, a towering man whose expression darkened with every second of Dr. Lin’s briefing—stood beside my bed. They had listened to the hospital security footage and the digital recording of Daniel’s confession through the door.
“Mrs. Vance—or Rachel, if you prefer,” Detective Miller said gently, pulling up a plastic chair and sitting down so she was at eye level with me. “We’ve executed a search warrant on your residence. Our forensics team is currently processing the basement utility room. They found the rope. They found the blood on the cedar beam.”
I stared blankly at the IV bag dripping clear saline into my vein. “Did they find his phone?”
Detective Miller’s eyebrows lifted slightly. “What phone, Rachel?”
“His personal phone,” I said, my voice dropping into a cold, steady register. “The one he used to record me while he did it. The one he bragged about in our family group chat before he realized how bad it looked and deleted it from the server.”
The detectives exchanged a sharp, knowing look.
“He recorded it?” Detective Vance asked, leaning forward.
“He thought I wouldn't remember because I passed out,” I whispered, closing my eyes as the horrifying memory flashed behind my eyelids. “He wanted to show his mother—Eleanor. She’s the one who told him that a proper Vance heir couldn't be born from a weak woman. She encouraged him to ‘break the stubbornness out of me.’”
Detective Miller’s pen scratched furiously across her notepad. “Eleanor Vance? Your mother-in-law?”
“Yes,” I opened my eyes, a cold, hard resolution settling deep into my bones. “And if you subpoena his cloud storage right now, before his lawyers wipe his encrypted drives, you’ll find not just my assault, but a digital paper trail proving that every penny of the Vance family fortune is built on illegal offshore embezzlement through Daniel’s firm.”
Detective Miller stared at me for a long, calculating moment. The quiet, submissive housewife Daniel had dragged into this hospital was gone. In her place stood a woman with nothing left to lose and everything to avenge.
“Detectives,” a nurse interrupted, rushing into the room with a tablet in hand. “You need to see this. Daniel Vance’s high-powered defense attorney just arrived with a court order demanding his immediate release, claiming medical coercion.”
Detective Miller stood up, buttoning her jacket with a lethal smile.
“Tell his attorney he can argue medical coercion in front of a federal judge,” Miller said coldly. “We just upgraded the charges from domestic battery to premeditated torture, kidnapping, and conspiracy to commit murder.”
As the police officers turned and walked out to meet the defense team in the corridor, my phone—resting on the bedside table—suddenly lit up.
It was a text message from an unknown number. But I knew the signature style instantly.
Daniel: “Rachel, drop this nonsense. You’re destroying our lives over an accident. Come home, let’s sweep this under the rug, or I swear to God you will rot in the streets with nothing.”
I picked up the phone, stared at the screen, and blocked his number forever.
Then, I dialed the only person who had ever truly tried to save me.
“Emily?” I said when my sister answered on the first ring.
May you like
“Rachel? Oh, thank God!” Emily sobbed through the phone. “I’m on my way to the hospital right now! Are you okay? Where is Daniel?!”
“Daniel is going to prison, Em,” I said, looking out the window at the gray, stormy sky clearing over the city. “And I’m coming home.”
