Chapter 7 - The Unbroken HomeSix months later, the golden autumn sun broke warmly over the manicured green lawns of the Hartwell Estate in Lake Forest, north of Chicago.

The fifty-acre stone mansion—surrounded by ancient oak trees, blooming white hydrangeas, and wide sunlit terraces—hummed with a vibrant, weightless peace.

On the ground floor of the estate's east wing sat a state-of-the-art conservation laboratory where I managed the restoration of rare manuscripts for universities across the country.

On a warm, clear afternoon in late October, the wide stone terrace overlooking the private lake was decorated with hundreds of soft pink roses and white silk banners for a warm family celebration.

Seven-year-old Eli ran through the golden fallen leaves wearing a small black suit matching Gabriel's, giggling happily as he played fetch with a golden retriever puppy.

Sitting at a white wooden table on the terrace wearing an immaculate ivory silk dress, her dark hair styled in soft waves, her skin radiant and whole, was me.

Gabriel walked out through the french doors carrying a silver tray holding two warm plates of roasted herb chicken, buttered green beans, and garlic mashed potatoes—a nod to the night our lives had changed forever.

He set the tray flat on the table, leaning down behind my chair, wrapping his broad arms around my shoulders, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against my cheek.

"How are the 16th-century vellum folios coming, my love?" Gabriel asked softly, resting his cheek against mine.

"Flawless, Mr. Hart," I smiled warmly, turning my head to look into his slate-gray eyes. "Though my favorite story is the one sitting right here."

Gabriel let out a low, genuine laugh—a sound that filled my entire heart with weightless, eternal joy—and reached into his pocket, pulling out a small velvet box.

He set it gently on the table in front of my plate.

I opened the box under the warm autumn sunlight.

Inside rested a breathtaking five-carat flawless solitaire diamond ring—a promise carved in liquid platinum and light.

"No more temporary catering shifts, Clara," Gabriel whispered softly, looking deep into my hazel eyes with an intensity that made my heart leap against my ribs. "Marry me. Let me love you and Eli for the rest of our lives."

Tears of pure, unadulterated happiness welling in my eyes, I turned in my seat, wrapping my arms tightly around his broad neck, pulling his lips down to mine in a deep, sweet, consuming kiss that sealed our promise under the open sky.

Eli ran up the terrace steps, jumping happily into Gabriel's broad arms, wrapping his small arms around both of our necks.

"Did you ask her, Gabriel?!" Eli beamed proudly. "Are you my real dad now?!"

Gabriel lifted our son effortlessly into his embrace, pressing a warm kiss against Eli's forehead, his gray eyes shining with hot, joyful tears.

"I am your dad forever, Eli," Gabriel promised softly, his baritone carrying smooth, calm, and echoing warmly across the quiet lake.

Outside the grand iron gates of the estate, the city of Chicago continued to spin, but standing on the sunlit terrace, wrapped in the arms of the man who had saved us, holding my son, I knew that our home, our peace, and our family were finally, beautifully, and forever home.
