Chapter 4 - The Intruder in the WardGrant stopped dead in his tracks just inside the doorway.

His eyes darted wildly around the sterile hospital room, taking in the monitors, the floral arrangements, Maya sitting quietly in the corner armchair with a bowl of noodles, and finally, Dominic Moretti standing like a stone wall beside the bed.
Finally, his gaze locked onto me.
“Claire,” he panted, taking a step forward. His face was pale, slick with nervous sweat, the polished veneer of the untouchable real estate tycoon completely shattered. “What... what is the meaning of this?”
I didn't flinch. I didn't clutch the baby tighter. I simply looked at him the way one might look at a stray dog that had wandered into a clean kitchen—with mild annoyance and zero fear.
“The meaning of what, Grant?” I asked, my voice cool and level. “A baby being born? It’s a fairly common biological occurrence. Though I suppose it might seem foreign to someone whose entire life is staged for the cameras.”
Grant ignored me, his eyes frantically dropping to the bundle resting against my chest. He took two fast, desperate steps toward the bed.
He didn't make it.
Dominic didn't even raise his voice, but the single step he took forward and the cold, flat glare he leveled at Grant was enough to freeze the man in his tracks.
“Step back, Kingsley,” Dominic warned, his voice sounding like grinding tectonic plates. “You are within arm's reach of a hospital security alarm, and I assure you, my men in the hallway are much less patient than I am.”
Grant swallowed hard, his chest heaving as he looked between Dominic and me. The sheer humiliation of standing in a public maternity ward in a rumpled wedding suit while another man guarded his ex-wife seemed to finally break whatever fragile control he had left.
“Claire, be reasonable,” Grant pleaded, his voice cracking with desperate panic. “You can't just... you can't drop a bomb like this while I’m in the middle of a wedding reception! Do you have any idea what the press is saying? Sienna is crying in the bridal suite! My mother is threatening to disown me! If the board finds out there’s an unrecorded heir born outside wedlock—especially with our messy divorce papers—the stock value will plummet ten points by Monday morning!”
I let out a short, cold laugh.
“Your stock value, Grant?” I asked, shaking my head in disbelief. “That’s your primary concern? Not the fact that you abandoned your wife, lied to the public, tried to ruin my shop, and spent a year pretending I was broken while you were running behind my back?”
“That was business!” Grant snapped, losing his temper for a split second before catching himself as Dominic’s shoulders tensed. He lowered his voice, shifting into the oily, manipulative charm that had once fooled me for years. “Look, Claire... we can fix this. We can work out an arrangement. A quiet settlement. You stay out of the press, sign a non-disclosure agreement, and my lawyers will set up a generous trust for the child. No fuss, no messy court battles. Everyone wins.”
“Everyone wins?” I repeated, staring at him as if he had lost his mind. “Grant, you spent six months letting your family call me barren. You let the newspapers tear my reputation to shreds. You walked out of my life without a backward glance. And now that you realize my daughter might hold a legal claim to your precious empire, you want to treat her like a confidential business liability to be swept under the rug with a cash settlement?”
“She’s my blood!” Grant shouted, stepping forward again, desperation overriding his fear of Dominic. “I have rights!”
“You have nothing,” a cold, hard voice echoed from the doorway.
We all turned. Maya was standing up from her chair, her arms crossed over her chest, her eyes flashing with pure venom.
“You gave up all your rights six months ago when you walked out of that courthouse and let the world spit on her,” Maya said, walking over to stand beside the bed, shoulder-to-shoulder with Dominic. “You don't get to waltz in here smelling of wedding champagne and demand a paternity test like you’re ordering takeout. Get out of this room before I call security myself.”
Grant glared at Maya, then shifted his gaze back to me, his face twisting into an ugly, desperate sneer.
“You think Moretti is going to protect you?” Grant hissed, pointing a shaking finger at Dominic. “He’s just using you to break my corporate holdings! The moment he gets what he wants from my real estate portfolio, he’ll drop you just like I did!”
Before I could open my mouth to reply, Dominic moved.
It wasn't a sudden, violent lunge—it was the slow, terrifying advance of a predator who had finally decided his prey had spoken too many words. In two long strides, Dominic closed the distance between them, grabbing Grant by the lapels of his expensive wedding suit and lifting him slightly off the floor.
Grant choked out a gasp, his eyes widening in pure, unadulterated terror as he stared into Dante Moretti’s dark, merciless eyes.
“Listen to me, you miserable coward,” Dominic whispered, his voice so quiet it barely carried past the bed, yet every single word vibrated with lethal absolute authority. “If you ever speak to Claire like that again—if you ever step foot on this floor, or even mention her name in public—I won't just take your real estate portfolio. I will take your freedom, your name, and everything your father spent fifty years building, and I will burn it down to ash before breakfast. Now get out of this hospital before I forget I’m a civilized man.”
Dominic shoved Grant backward.
Grant stumbled hard against the doorframe, gasping for air, his face pale and slick with cold sweat. He didn't say another word. He didn't try to look proud. He turned on his heel, bolted down the hallway, and vanished into the elevator bank before the doors could even close.
The room fell silent once more.
I let out a long breath, my hands trembling slightly as I looked down at my sleeping daughter.
Dominic turned back toward the bed, adjusting his cuffs, his expression instantly softening the moment his eyes met mine.

“Are you alright?” he asked softly, stepping back to my side.
“I am,” I said, a genuine, radiant smile spreading across my face as I reached out and took his hand. “I really am.”
