Chapter 7 - The Sunrise Over Lake MichiganTwo weeks later, the front page of every major newspaper in the country carried the same headline: EMPIRE OF GLASS: THE FALL OF DAMIAN VALE AND THE EXPOSURE OF THE MORETTI-VALE CARTEL CORRUPTION.

Federal prosecutors had unsealed a massive fifty-count indictment against Damian Vale, my father, and several corrupt city officials. The stolen foundation funds had been fully recovered and placed into an independent trust managed in my mother’s name, dedicated to supporting underprivileged families across Chicago.

The penthouse on Lake Michigan was quiet, bathed in the soft, golden light of an early autumn sunrise.

I stood on the balcony, wrapped in a cashmere robe, sipping hot coffee as I watched the sun crest over the shimmering waters of the lake. The air was crisp, clean, and entirely free of fear.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind, pulling me back against a warm, solid chest.

“Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Moretti-that-could-be,” Luca murmured, resting his chin on my shoulder.

I leaned back into his embrace, a genuine, unburdened smile spreading across my lips.

“I was just thinking about the night I ran out of that chapel in my bare feet,” I said softly. “If someone had told me I’d end up here, standing on your balcony with the most feared man in Chicago, I would have laughed in their face.”

Luca chuckled, pressing a soft kiss to the side of my neck.

“You didn't run into my car by accident, Victoria,” he whispered. “You knew exactly what you were doing the moment you chose my door.”

“Maybe,” I admitted, turning around in his arms to wrap my arms around his neck, looking up into his dark, affectionate eyes. “Or maybe I just recognized a kindred spirit. Two people who refused to let monsters write our endings.”

Luca’s expression softened completely, the hard, lethal edge of the underworld king melting away into something profoundly tender. He cupped my face with his warm hand, his thumb gently brushing my cheekbone.

“The war is over, Victoria,” Luca promised, his voice thick with absolute devotion. “Nobody will ever cage you again. You own your life now. And... if you’ll have me... you can share mine.”

I looked deep into his eyes—the eyes of the man who had given me an army, a voice, and a future—and smiled.

“I think,” I whispered, leaning up to press my lips against his, “we make a pretty good team.”

As the sun finally flooded the Chicago skyline with brilliant morning light, the runaway bride and the dangerous king stood together on the balcony, ready to face whatever came next—side by side, holding all the cards.
