Chapter 5 - The Emergency Boardroom

Hook: He stood at the head of the corporate boardroom declaring himself the new CEO, until his dead son's widow walked in backed by the state prosecutor.

---

The 30th floor of the Nexus Technologies building downtown offered a panoramic view of the entire city.

Inside the executive boardroom, twelve high-ranking board members sat around a massive oval glass table. At the head of the table sat Harold Whitmore, wearing a fresh tailored suit he had bought three hours ago to replace his rain-soaked clothes. Beside him sat his corporate lawyer, Richard Vance (no relation to Victoria), looking over a stack of hastily prepared probate motions.

Harold slammed his hand on the table, grinning with manufactured confidence.

“Gentlemen, ladies,” Harold announced loudly, leaning forward. “We all mourn the tragic loss of my son, Ethan. But a company of this scale cannot operate without a strong, experienced hand at the wheel. As Ethan’s father and the founder of the Whitmore legacy, I am officially motioning for the board to install me as Chairman and Acting Chief Executive Officer.”

Several older board members exchanged uneasy looks.

“Harold,” one female director spoke up cautiously. “What about Claire? Ethan’s wife? She has six young children to raise, and Ethan always maintained that she was his equal partner in every decision.”

Harold scoffed dismissively, waving his hand in the air. “Claire is a sweet girl, but let’s be entirely honest here: she was an elementary schoolteacher. She knows nothing about software infrastructure, venture capital, or corporate governance. Giving her control of a sixty-million-dollar firm would be corporate suicide. She belongs at home, taking care of the kids.”

“Is that so, Harold?” a clear, steady voice called out from the doorway.

The heavy double glass doors swung open.

Every single head in the room whirled around.

I walked into the boardroom wearing a sharp navy-blue blazer, my hair pulled back neatly, my eyes calm and unyielding. Beside me walked Victoria Hayes, carrying two thick leather binders, accompanied by a man in a dark grey suit wearing an official badge: Assistant District Attorney Marcus Cole.

Harold’s jaw practically hit the glass table. “Claire?! What are you doing here?! This is a private executive board meeting! Security, remove these people!”

“Sit down, Mr. Whitmore,” Assistant District Attorney Cole ordered, his authority instantly silencing the room. “I am here on behalf of the State Financial Crimes Division.”

The board members gasped, several of them sitting up straight in their chairs.

Victoria Hayes walked smoothly to the front of the room, setting her binders down right in front of Harold.

“Members of the board,” Victoria announced, her voice echoing clearly off the glass walls. “Harold Whitmore has presented you with a fraudulent narrative. He claims Ethan died without a will. He claims the Whitmore family owns the controlling shares of Nexus Technologies.”

Victoria plugged her silver USB drive into the boardroom presentation system.

Within seconds, the large digital screens on the wall illuminated with Ethan’s recorded video message, followed by certified ownership certificates from the State Securities Commission.

The board members watched in absolute silence as Ethan’s voice filled the room, explicitly revoking Harold’s board position and transferring full corporate authority to me.

When the video finished, the entire room sat in stunned awe.

“This is a forgery!” Harold screamed, springing from his chair, his face contorted in frantic rage. “She coerced Ethan while he was on pain medication in the hospital! My lawyer will contest this in court!”

“Contest all you want, Harold,” Victoria replied calmly, pulling out a second stack of documents. “But while you’re contesting, you might want to explain to Assistant District Attorney Cole why you transferred three hundred thousand dollars from Nexus Technologies’ charitable foundation into your personal offshore account four days ago.”

Harold froze, his rage instantly turning into pure, unadulterated terror.

“We conducted a forensic audit of the company’s accounts three hours ago,” Victoria continued, turning to the board members. “Harold Whitmore utilized fake vendor invoices to siphon funds out of the company while his son was lying in a hospital bed.”

ADA Cole stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his coat pocket.

“Harold Whitmore,” ADA Cole stated firmly. “You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and filing fraudulent legal instruments.”

The board members looked on in utter disgust as the police officers stepped forward, forcing Harold’s hands behind his back and clicking the cold steel cuffs around his wrists.

“Claire! Please!” Harold yelled, his voice cracking into desperate, pathetic gasps as he was pulled toward the door. “Talk to them! I’m Ethan’s father! We’re family!”

I stood at the head of the table, looking him dead in the eye with complete calm.

“Family doesn't throw children into the rain, Harold,” I said softly. “You reap what you sow.”
