Chapter 4 - The Boardroom CoupThe emergency board meeting of Vance Global Holdings was convened at 2:00 PM on the top floor of the downtown skyscraper—the very building Julian had once lorded over like a king.

I arrived flanked by Marcus Vance and two senior federal investigators from the financial crimes division.
When we stepped into the grand mahogany boardroom, the heavy atmosphere of corporate panic was suffocating. Twelve senior board members sat around the massive glass table, their faces pale, whispering nervously among themselves. Victoria Vance sat at the far end, her posture rigid, though her hands trembled visibly as she clutched a silver pen.
Julian sat beside her, staring blankly at the polished glass surface in front of him.
The moment the double doors opened and I walked in wearing a tailored emerald-green pantsuit, every head snapped toward me.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Victoria demanded, standing up sharply, trying to summon her old authority. “This is a private corporate meeting! Security! Remove this woman from the premises immediately!”
“Sit down, Victoria,” Marcus Vance commanded, his voice ringing with absolute, icy authority as he tossed a thick binder of federal indictments onto the center of the table. “She has every right to be here. In fact, she owns more voting shares in this corporation than anyone sitting at this table.”
Gasps echoed around the room.
“Absurd!” shouted one of the senior vice presidents, adjusting his tie frantically. “Vance Global is a family-controlled entity! The majority shares belong to the Cross estate!”
“Correction,” I said, stepping forward and resting my hands on the back of an empty leather chair. “The majority shares were originally held by the Vance family trust—which was established by my grandfather, Arthur Vance, before your little syndicate of sycophants hijacked it.”
Victoria’s face lost every trace of color. She stared at me with wide, disbelieving eyes. “Arthur... Arthur Vance was your grandfather? But your last name was Carter—”
“I took my mother’s maiden name when I married your son, hoping humility would make you accept me,” I replied coldly. “How foolish I was. But now, my father and my cousin have transferred the controlling interest of the Vance trust directly back to me.”
Marcus opened his briefcase and slid copies of the legal transfer documents to every board member.
“Furthermore,” Marcus continued, “we have filed formal criminal charges against Victoria Vance for forgery, identity theft, and corporate conspiracy relating to the falsification of a death certificate and the illegal burial of an unidentified Jane Doe to fraudulently settle family estate disputes.”
Federal investigators stepped forward, flashing their badges directly at Victoria.
“Victoria Vance, you are under arrest,” the lead investigator stated, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.
“No! This is a setup! Julian, do something!” Victoria screamed, thrashing as the handcuffs clicked tightly around her wrists. She was hauled out of the boardroom kicking and screaming, her diamond-encrusted wrap dragging across the carpet—a fallen queen dragged down by her own ruthless ambition.
Silence descended upon the boardroom. The twelve directors looked like men awaiting execution.
I turned my gaze toward Julian. He hadn't moved an inch. He sat slumped in his leather chair, staring at his hands as though he didn't even recognize them anymore.
“Julian,” I said quietly.
He lifted his head, his dark eyes hollow and defeated.
“You wanted an heir,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the silent room. “You wanted a dynasty that valued power over humanity. But dynasties built on lies always crumble.”
I walked over to the head of the table, sitting down in the CEO’s chair—the very seat Julian had occupied just twenty-four hours ago.
“Effective immediately,” I announced to the board, “Apex Logistics and all subsidiary assets of Julian Cross are seized by this corporation to repay embezzled funds. And Julian Cross is stripped of his title, his shares, and his position as executive officer.”
Julian didn't fight back. He slowly stood up, buttoned his wrinkled suit jacket, and walked toward the double doors without a word. As he passed me, he stopped for a fraction of a second, whispering softly:
May you like
“I’m sorry, Evelyn. For everything.”
Then he walked out, closing the door behind him, leaving his empire behind in the hands of the woman he had thrown into the storm.
