Chapter 1 - The Shadows of the GalaThe grand ballroom of the Fairmont Copley Plaza was a brilliant haze of crystal chandeliers, gold leafing, and murmuring elites. I held a glass of untouched champagne, my fingers brushing against the cool glass as I stood near the marble pillars.

Beside me stood Julian Vance, a wealthy real estate developer and distant cousin of one of Boston’s corrupt councilmen. He was polite, rich, and completely harmless—the exact opposite of Gabriel Mercer. Yet, despite Julian’s charming anecdotes about his latest property acquisition, my mind remained trapped in the executive office suite miles away.

I could still feel the phantom heat of Gabriel’s rough hand hovering above my bare shoulder. I could still hear the low, gravelly threat in his voice: “If he touches you somewhere you don’t want to be touched, you call me. Understood?”

For three years, I had been Chastity Reed—the invisible, flawless secretary who organized his empire, laundered his profits, and bandaged his bullet wounds in the dark of night without a word of complaint. I had trained myself to lock my heart behind a wall of cold professionalism. But tonight, the emerald silk dress had shattered the illusion. Gabriel had seen me not as a fixture of his office, but as a woman. And the look in his eyes had terrified and thrilled me in equal measure.

"Chastity, you're quiet tonight," Julian said softly, stepping closer to me. "Is everything alright? You seem miles away."

"I'm sorry, Julian," I forced a gentle smile, adjusting my evening clutch. "Just tired from a long week at the firm."

"Well, you look absolutely breathtaking," Julian murmured, his eyes lingering on my face before his hand reached out, hovering near my bare waist. "I’m glad you accepted my invitation. Many men in this room are wondering who the stunning woman on my arm is."

Before Julian’s hand could touch my skin, a sudden shift in the air swept through the ballroom.

The quiet hum of elite chatter began to die down. The orchestra’s melody seemed to stutter. Conversations dried up near the entrance, replaced by hushed, panicked whispers that rippled across the room like a cold draft.

I turned my head toward the double mahogany doors of the ballroom.

My heart hammered violently against my ribs.

Standing in the entryway, flanked by four hulking guards in tailored dark suits, was Gabriel Mercer.

He had discarded his rolled-up sleeves and loose tie. Now, he wore a bespoke charcoal tuxedo that broadened his shoulders and made him look like a dark god standing among frail mortals. His dark hair was combed back, his jaw set like granite, and a heavy, suffocating aura of pure, dangerous authority radiated from him. He didn't belong at a philanthropic charity gala. He belonged in the shadows, ruling the underworld with an iron fist.

Yet, here he was.

Gabriel didn't look at the mayor. He didn't look at the high-society women gasping behind their silk fans or the corrupt politicians bowing their heads in deference. His dark, piercing eyes scanned the vast ballroom with lethal precision until they locked directly onto me.

His gaze dropped to Julian’s hand, which was still hovering inches from my waist.

Gabriel’s expression hardened into pure, unadulterated ice.

He began walking across the polished dance floor. The sea of billionaires, judges, and socialites parted instantly for him, stepping aside as if a predator were stalking through a herd of sheep.

Julian straightened up, clearing his throat nervously. "Good Lord... that’s Gabriel Mercer. What is he doing at a civic charity event?"

"He's here for me," I whispered, my breath catching in my throat.

Gabriel stopped two feet away. The scent of cedar, expensive tobacco, and rain washed over me, completely erasing the floral perfume of the ballroom.

"Mr. Mercer," Julian stammered, holding out a hand in an attempt to look composed. "An honor to see you here—"

Gabriel didn't even acknowledge Julian’s existence. He didn't look at him, nor did he shake his hand. His eyes remained fixed entirely on mine, dark and swirling with a terrifying, possessive fury that made my pulse race out of control.

"Your date is over, Chastity," Gabriel said. His voice was low, deep, and utterly command-driven.

"Gabriel, what are you doing here?" I asked, forcing my voice to remain steady despite the electric shock running through my veins. "I told you my evening was private."

"It was," Gabriel replied, taking a step closer until his chest almost brushed against my emerald dress. "Until I realized I don't care about your privacy when it comes to keeping you safe."

He turned his head slowly toward Julian. The cold, lethal glare he directed at the real estate developer was enough to make the grown man flush pale and take a step back.

"Leave," Gabriel growled softly at Julian. "Before I decide your firm's pending zoning permits aren't the only thing getting canceled tonight."

Julian looked at me, then at Gabriel, smelling the undeniable stench of death and power surrounding the mafia kingpin. "I... I apologize for any misunderstanding, Mr. Mercer," Julian muttered before turning and retreating rapidly into the crowd.

I glared at Gabriel, indignation flaring in my chest. "You just ruined my evening!"

May you like

Gabriel reached out. For the first time in three years, his long, calloused fingers closed around my wrist. His grip was firm, hot, and unyielding.

"I didn't ruin your evening, Chastity," he growled into my ear, his lips brushing against my temple. "I saved you from a wasted night. Get in the car."
