Chapter 4 - The Shadow of VictoriaThe rain hammered against the reinforced glass windows of the hospital’s executive suite as I reviewed Chloe’s latest medical charts. The pediatric neurologist had just stepped out, bringing miraculous news: the swelling in her brain had subsided significantly, and her vital signs were stabilizing into a normal, healthy rhythm. She was expected to wake up within the next twenty-four hours.

A wave of profound relief washed over me. For the first time in days, my shoulders unknotted.

Then my phone buzzed on the desk. An incoming call from an unknown, restricted number.

I frowned, swiping the screen to accept. “Evelyn Carter.”

“Dr. Carter,” a voice hissed through the static—a voice I recognized instantly from high-society galas and boardroom mixers. Victoria Sterling. “You think you’re so smart, don’t you? You think locking Grant up and stealing his company makes you untouchable.”

I remained entirely calm, leaning back in my leather chair. “Victoria. I wondered when you’d crawl out from under the rock. How does it feel knowing your meal ticket is wearing an orange jumpsuit?”

“Shut your mouth!” Victoria shrieked, her composed corporate veneer completely shattering. “You don't know anything! Grant promised me that empire. He told me you were just a stepping stone, a pathetic little doctor he was going to discard the moment his father handed over the crown!”

“Well, it seems your boyfriend was a terrible prognosticator,” I replied evenly. “And by the way, the federal marshals are currently seizing the penthouse apartment he bought you with embezzled corporate funds. I hope you packed light, because you’re about to be homeless.”

A sharp intake of breath echoed through the line, followed by a terrifyingly manic laugh.

“You think taking the apartment hurts me?” Victoria snarled. “Evelyn, you have no idea what Grant set into motion before the police dragged him away. You think he was just beating that brat because he had a temper? He was protecting a secret. A secret that involves you, your precious hospital, and a medical malpractice cover-up that goes back five years to the day your late husband—no, your real husband’s death.”

My blood ran instantly cold. The air in the room seemed to vanish.

“What are you talking about?” I demanded, standing up so fast my chair tipped over. “Michael didn't die in a normal car accident. That was investigated—!”

“Was it?” Victoria mocked, her voice dripping with venom. “Check the medical examiner’s backup files from the night Michael’s car went off Interstate 84. Check who signed off on the toxicology report before the hospital archives were sealed. Grant didn't just inherit his family’s wealth, Evelyn. He inherited their corruption. And if I’m going down, I’m taking your entire saintly reputation down with me.”

Click.

The line went dead.

I stood in the center of the silent office, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. Michael’s death. For six years, I had mourned him as a tragic victim of a stormy night on the interstate. Grant had been the grieving brother-in-law, the supportive pillar who swept in to help me raise Chloe, offering his home, his protection, and eventually marriage.

What if none of it was an accident?

My phone buzzed again immediately. This time, it was a text message from David Vance with a single attached audio file and a text string:

“Evelyn, you need to hear this. We pulled Grant’s personal laptop from the evidence locker and decrypted his private hard drive. Listen to file 048.”

With trembling fingers, I tapped the audio file and pressed play.

Grant’s voice filled the quiet room, casual, cold, and dripping with venomous malice:

“Michael was getting too close to exposing the embezzlement scheme. The brakes on his sedan were just a minor engineering adjustment. Once he was out of the way, I got the company, I got the insurance payout, and best of all? I got Evelyn right where I wanted her. A broken widow is so much easier to control than a suspicious wife.”

The room spun. The walls seemed to close in around me as the horrifying truth settled over my soul like an avalanche.

Grant hadn't just abused my daughter and stolen my life.

He had murdered my first husband. And I had married him.
