Chapter 5 - Unraveling the WebThe federal investigation expanded rapidly over the following weeks like a rolling avalanche.

Once Daniel’s office seized Kyle and Vanessa’s digital devices, financial forensics revealed that the Central Park house scam was only the tip of the iceberg. Kyle had been running a sprawling network of fraudulent elder-care refinancing schemes across three different counties, targeting elderly homeowners recovering from major medical procedures by utilizing compromised notary seals and fake power-of-attorney documents.
Marcus Vance, the disbarred notary, was arrested at his home in Queens within forty-eight hours, immediately cooperating with federal prosecutors in exchange for a reduced sentence, handing over encrypted chat logs between himself, Kyle, and Vanessa that mapped out the entire conspiracy in chilling, calculated detail.
Mom and I spent those weeks relaxing in the peaceful comfort of our hotel suite before moving her temporarily into a bright, sunlit apartment overlooking the city park, far away from the suburban neighborhood tainted by betrayal.
One evening, while Daniel was reviewing court depositions at the dining table, Mom walked over with a cup of chamomile tea, setting it gently beside his laptop.
"You didn't have to risk your career for me, son," Mom said softly, her hand resting affectionately on Daniel’s shoulder.
Daniel looked up, his stern investigative demeanor melting away instantly into the warm, gentle smile I fell in love with years ago. "Mom, protecting family isn't a risk. It's an absolute duty. Besides, taking down white-collar criminals is literally what the taxpayers pay me for. Doing it to protect my own family was just immensely satisfying."
"What happens to the house?" Mom asked quietly, her gaze drifting toward the window. "Legal title is still tied up in federal receivership pending the criminal forfeiture trial."
"Federal restitution laws are very clear in cases of elder exploitation," Daniel explained, pulling up a digital case summary on his screen. "Because the property transfer was proven to be fraudulent ab initio—meaning void from its inception—the title reverts entirely back to its original owner free and clear of all encumbrances, liens, and mortgages Kyle tried to attach to it. Furthermore, any financial assets Kyle and Vanessa attempted to shelter in their offshore shell company have been seized by the court and allocated directly toward your medical restitution fund."
I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for a month. "So... the house is legally hers again?"
"100 percent," Daniel smiled. "And by the time the snow melts this spring, that property will be worth significantly more once the county assessor corrects the fraudulent tax assessments Kyle manipulated."

Mom smiled, a genuine, radiant expression that reached all the way to her eyes for the first time in months. "I don't care about the market value, Daniel. I just want my garden back."
"You'll have your garden back, Mom," I said, squeezing her hand. "And this time, the gate is going to have a brand-new padlock—one that only we have the keys to."
