Chapter 1 - The Trap at Gate D22He thought he was flying toward a luxurious life in Paris, but he was actually waiting at the boarding gate for his own arrest.

The ambient hum of Dallas Fort Worth International Airport at three in the morning was a dull, echoing blur of fluorescent lights, quiet footsteps, and distant announcements.
Adrian Mercer adjusted his designer jacket, admiring his reflection in the dark glass of Gate D22. Beside him, Vanessa Cole was sipping an iced latte, admiring the diamond bracelet sparkling on her wrist—the vintage family heirloom she had coerced Adrian into stealing from my jewelry box.
"Do you think she's still out cold?" Vanessa asked, her red lips curling into a smug, triumphant smile.
"She won't wake up until noon," Adrian chuckled softly, checking his Rolex. "By the time her eyes open, our flight will be halfway across the Atlantic. Let her call her lawyers. Every single account under Mercer Logistics has been emptied into our Zurich account."
Vanessa leaned against his shoulder, giggling. "You're ruthless, Adrian. I love it."
"I'm not ruthless, sweetheart. I'm just practical," Adrian boasted, puffing out his chest. "Elena was always just dead weight. A quiet, boring woman who thought running a multi-million-dollar logistics firm was about 'integrity' and 'hard work.' She had no vision."
At 3:15 a.m., the gate agent announced the final boarding call for First Class passengers to Paris Charles de Gaulle.
Adrian took Vanessa’s hand, wheeling their four pristine rimowa suitcases toward the boarding ramp. He tapped his phone screen once more, opening our text thread. My reply—“Enjoy the airport.”—was still staring back at him.
He sneered at the screen. "Stupid woman. She probably thinks I'll reply to her pathetic groveling."
He handed their two first-class passport booklets and boarding passes to the gate agent, a young woman with a sharp, professional smile.
She scanned Vanessa’s passport first. BEEP. The green light flashed. "Have a wonderful flight, Miss Cole," the agent said.
Then she took Adrian’s passport, running it through the digital optical scanner.
BZZZZZT.
A harsh, red warning light flashed across the computer terminal screen. The computer emitted a sharp, high-pitched error tone that echoed through the quiet gate area.
The agent’s smile vanished instantly. She swiped the passport again.
BZZZZZT.
"Is there a problem?" Adrian asked, his voice tinged with arrogant impatience. "I am the COO of Mercer Logistics. Check it manually."
"I'm sorry, Mr. Mercer," the agent said calmly, her eyes flicking to the security monitor in front of her. "The system indicates an absolute Interpol Border Alert on your passport. It has been revoked by federal court order as of 2:30 a.m. tonight."
Adrian froze. His face drained of color. "What?! Revoked? That’s impossible! It’s a glitch! I have a first-class ticket!"
"And furthermore," the gate agent added, pressing a hidden button beneath her counter, "your payment method for both tickets was declined due to a total asset freeze on all associated corporate and personal credit accounts."
Vanessa gasped, dropping her latte. "Adrian! What is she talking about?! What about the money in Zurich?!"
Before Adrian could speak, six uniformed officers from the Port Authority Police, accompanied by two sharp-looking men in dark trench coats, marched out of the main concourse with military precision. They moved directly toward Gate D22, surrounding Adrian and Vanessa.
"Adrian Mercer?" the lead officer asked, pulling a set of heavy steel handcuffs from his utility belt.
"Do you know who I am?!" Adrian shouted, stepping back, his hands shaking violently as he pulled out his phone. "This is a misunderstanding! Call my attorneys!"
"Mr. Mercer, you are under arrest pursuant to an emergency warrant issued by the Northern District Court of Texas," the lead federal agent stated, his voice ringing across the terminal. "The charges include felony wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, identity theft, and criminal conspiracy."
"No! No! That's impossible!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away as two female officers stepped up to restrain her. "I have nothing to do with this! I'm just his girlfriend!"
"Miss Vanessa Cole," the agent continued relentlessly, "you are also named as an active co-conspirator in an eight-million-dollar offshore money laundering scheme involving shell entities registered in your cousin’s name. Hands behind your back."
As the steel cuffs clicked tightly around Adrian’s wrists, his phone buzzed in his pocket.
The lead agent pulled the phone out to log it into evidence. The screen illuminated with a newly delivered email from my attorney.
The subject line read: Notice of Corporate Receivership & Emergency Restraining Order — Elena Mercer.
Attached to the email was a certified court document signed by Judge Katherine Vance at 2:00 a.m., freezing every single asset, revoking Adrian’s executive powers, and placing Mercer Logistics into my sole, absolute control.

Adrian stared at the glowing phone screen, his breath catching in his chest as the terrifying truth washed over him like ice water.
I hadn't slept through his escape. I had watched him leave, counting down the minutes until he walked straight into the cage I had spent six months preparing for him.
