Chapter 4 - The High-Speed ChaseThe two black SUVs closed the distance with terrifying coordination, their high-beams blinding in the rain-slicked rearview mirror.

“They tracked my burner phone,” Maya muttered, spinning the steering wheel into a sharp lane change that sent their sedan skidding across the wet asphalt.
“Can we outrun them?” Alex asked, bracing his hands against the dashboard as the car fishtailed dangerously near a concrete barrier.
“Not in this stock sedan,” Maya replied coldly. “Not when they have local highway patrol dispatchers on their payroll clearing the road ahead of us.”
True to her word, flashing red and blue lights appeared up ahead on the interstate—not chasing them, but forming an improvised blockade across all three lanes. A state police cruiser was parked diagonally across the tarmac, its officer standing outside with his hand resting on his holstered firearm.
“They’re boxing us in!” Alex yelled. “If we stop, we’re dead!”
“We’re not stopping,” Maya said, her eyes narrowing with lethal focus.
Instead of braking, Maya slammed her foot down on the accelerator. The sedan roared, its engine screaming as it rocketed past one hundred miles per hour. She didn't aim for the center lane or the shoulder; she aimed directly for the narrow gap between the police cruiser and the concrete median barrier—a gap barely wider than the car itself.
“Maya, no!” Alex screamed, closing his eyes.
Crash!
The right-side mirror sheared off with an ear-splitting screech of grinding plastic and metal. The car bounced violently against the concrete barrier, sending a shower of orange sparks flying into the night air. For a horrifying second, the vehicle lifted off two wheels before slamming back down onto the tarmac with a concussive thud that rattled Alex’s teeth.
They tore through the blockade, leaving the stunned state trooper diving out of the way behind his cruiser.
In the rearview mirror, the two pursuing SUVs tried to follow through the narrow gap, but the first one miscalculated, clipping the barrier at full speed and flipping into a violent, rolling crash across the lanes.
Maya didn't look back. She navigated another three sudden turns through the industrial district before killing the headlights entirely and sliding the car into the cavernous, darkened interior of an abandoned shipping warehouse by the harbor.
The engine clicked as it cooled in the damp silence.
Alex let out a long, shuddering breath, his hands shaking uncontrollably. He looked over at Maya, who was already pulling a ruggedized military laptop out from beneath her seat.

“Where are we?” Alex asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
“A safehouse,” Maya said, flipping open the laptop screen, which immediately illuminated her face with a pale, blue glow. “And more importantly, the place where we launch our counter-offensive.”
